John Macey Whole Foods Case Study

John Mackey the CEO of Whole Sale Food, posted thousands of anonymous comments on Yahoo from 1999 to 2006. For seven years, Mr. Mackey had an online alter ego. He was using the Username, Rahodeb a variation of Deborah, his wife’s name. John Mackey typed out more than 1,100 entries on Yahoo Finance’s bulletin board within those seven years (Martin, 2007). On this yahoo bulletin board Mr. Mackey praises his own companies stock, and occasionally talks bad about the “Wild Oats Market”. In January 2005 “Rahodeb” posted “No company would want to buy Wild Oats Markets Inc., a natural-foods grocer, at its price then of about $8 a share” he also posts “Would Whole Foods buy OATS?” “Almost surely not at current prices. What would they gain? OATS locations are too small” (Kesmodel, 2007). John speculated that Wild oat would be sold after they go into Bankruptcy or they stock fell below $5. I could see why Mr. Mackey thought this would be a good idea. Going anonymous to talk good about your company so that you could get more customers is understandable, I believe he wanted to express his opinions and he couldn’t, due to his big role of being the CEO of Whole foods. …show more content…
He also stated “I posted on Yahoo! under a pseudonym because I had fun doing it. Many people post on bulletin boards using pseudonyms.” He said that “I never intended any of those postings to be identified with me” (Marco, 2007). He didn’t stop to think if this decision was illegal, he just felt the need to state his opinion. He also didn’t think of anyone but himself, Him Stating “I had fun doing it” shows that. The second Step would be consider the point of view of the company’s employees, top management, stockholders, customers, suppliers, and community. The decision he made for the company was an idea he thought would be positive, by stating all positive feedback from his company, But that decision was unethical. He did consider his stockholders in a way he thought would be positive. That is mostly what John talks about on this bulletin board. “The comments were typical of banter on Internet message boards for stocks” (Marco, 2007). Next would be to consider the alternatives you have available to you and how they affect the stakeholders. For example the Consequences. After John Mackey was reviled as the person behind this “Rahodeb” name a lot of people were disappointed in him. Not only to state his opinions undercover but also to talk so badly about the competition, that shows a sign of weakness and fear. Mr. Mackey didn’t feel as if what he did was wrong. I believe he felt as if that was just stating his opinions, and from his

Our partner in the fight against hunger, Jewish Family & Community Services (JFCS), runs a food pantry that caters to the needs of over 8,600 people in five counties. JFCS annually serves about 77,000 meals to low-income adults and families who struggle with hunger. There are times when the normal 20 to 30 daily visitors swell to over 200, leaving the pantry’s cupboards bare (Cravey, 2015).…

When activists, citizens, and others made pleas for prosecuting the companies who were manipulating information and committing investor fraud, Congress enacted a corporate reform law (130). This law placed heavy requirements on companies while ignoring those who failed in regulating the previous companies. While the corporate reforms did improve the companies superficially, the only way to actually improve a company is moral reform. There are three principles that summarize corporate reform. Transparency is the first: that the company will “conduct business and make decisions with integrity, honesty, and input from investors.”…
