Importance Of Protection From Cats

Protection from Cats:
Cats are a threat to birds as they kill them for food. These include loose pets, feral or strays cats. Pet owners and savvy backyard birders only need to take simple steps so as to protect their birds from cats. You don’t have to give up your pets. There are several methods which can be used for controlling the birds’ habitat and the behaviour of the cats. The number of injured and killed birds in your yard will be minimized.
How to control Cat Behaviour
It is hard for one to train cats to avoid the hunting behaviour which can injure or even kill wild birds. The easiest way on how this can be achieved is by minimizing the interaction between the cat and the birds. The population of feral cats which can prey on the birds

Birdbaths and birdfeeders should be kept at least 5 meters away from shrubbery. A cover which can reveal approaching predators should be used. Feeders should be kept 10-12 feet from covers which are dangerous.
2. If there are shrubs or hedges near your yard which can conceal predators, install a wire fence in the front to prevent birds from being attacked by predators.
3. Identify any access points in your fence and repair or block them to prevent the cats from sneaking in and preying on the birds.
4. The design of your bird house should be secure so as to deter predators. The roof should be steep and no perches. Nesting boxes should be kept at least 8 feet from the ground so that cats do not jump into the box.
5. Shrubbery and brush piles should be checked on regular basis for fledging birds and ground nests since they are more vulnerable to the prowling cats.
6. Feeders should be supported by metal or plastic poles. This will ensure that cats get no support to climb to the feeder. Baffles can also be used for protection of the birds against hunting cats.
7. Ground feeders or low feeders should not be used as they make it easy for the cats to catch the birds.

Although feeders should be cleaned on a regular basis, it should be done more frequently once a disease outbreak has occurred. To minimize the spread of the bacteria, identify any surfaces which birds come into contact with and clean them thoroughly. Examples of these include feeder poles, perches, trays and others.
2. Clean the Ground
Most birds usually like to forage on the ground. They will also eat the seeds which have been spilled once the feeders have become crowded. The ground beneath the feeders should be cleaned thoroughly. Plants and grasses should be trimmed short so as to reduce the infected surfaces.
3. Feeders should be removed
If many feeders are offered for the backyard birds, some of them should be removed in case a disease outbreak occurs. This will encourage the dispersal of local bird population. Birds from different flocks will always assemble at different feeders and this will lead to a faster spread of diseases. If there is no food source, then the spread of the disease will be less since they not come into contact more often.
4. Inspection of the food supplies
The stores of birdseed should be inspected for mold, mildew, spoilage and other signs which can cause diseases. If you suspect any seed, do away with it so that it doesn’t get into contact with the birds.
5. Spreading the

A solution to solve this problem would be to ban people from feeding birds. This would affect the population in a certain area because not as many birds would go there because they know that they will not get food. In the article, it says “ Feeding birds can be fun, but doing so encourages more birds to flock to feeding areas.” ( Starcheski, 19) Because the population of birds is very high, a lot of bird poop is being dropped. Sometimes, there may be so much bird poop that…

Two different locations were examined: the Winthrop Lake and the Winthrop golf course. Both areas are located at the Winthrop Recreational Complex, in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The experiment was formed to determine the amount of species richness in both general areas. The hypothesis that was formed stated: that the Winthrop Lake area would have a greater amount of species diversity than the golf course area based on effects of temperature, wind speed, and local habits. When going into these locations groups of six individuals were formed.…

Many different animals develop different strategic foraging behaviours to survive the winter months. The black-capped chickadees (Parus atricapillus) are a songbird that can be observed throughout North America and remain year round even during the cold winters (Templeton, Greene, & Davis, 2005, 1935). During the winter the chickadees form an average flock size of about six to eight, but this number can vary (Templeton, Greene, & Davis, 2005, 1935). In the flock there is a social hierarchy and the dominant individual demonstrates certain behaviours such as vocalizing, bluffs threat, chasing, displacement or fighting to state its dominance (Barkan, 1990, p. 393, Hartzler, 1970, p. 429; Odum, 1942, p. 521). Dominance in a black-capped chickadee is observed when one individual known as a subordinate submits to the dominant individual that is perceived to be more prevailing in…

The current range is less than five percent of their original range across Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and parts of Tennessee and South Carolina. Today, the main threats are habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation (National Park Service, n.d.). We need to recognize the signs and figure out how the stop the extinctions of today’s ecosystem. To get an idea of the shape and characteristics of a mature Florida panther, picture a large cat that has no spots and consists of mainly one color.…

Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is now one of my favorite places in St. Petersburg! This field trip was a nice break from the fast-paced urban lifestyle that I have been living since moving away from home. Our excursion began at the bird-of-prey aviary. There were several types of birds at the aviary: eastern screech owls, turkey vultures, barred owls, great horned owls, and a bald eagle, to name a few. At the aviary, I learned that barred owls are best known for a call that sounds like, "Who cooks for you……

Many people overlook the beauties of nature and focus only on the flaws. However, two authors in particular see the astonishing qualities of nature behind human eyes. Terry Krautwurst and David Shaw, the authors of “Brain Birds” and “A Soft Spot For Crows”, have an exceedingly positive attitude towards crows and ravens as indicated by their complimentary language and word choice. Terry Krautwurst, the author of “Brain Birds”, shows great admiration and regard to crows and ravens. For example, he states that they are “fawned over and feared by humans”.…

They are encroaching upon the barred owl’s habitat and lands, and the spotted owl population is diminishing. In an article by the San Jose Mercury News, they stated that, “barred owls are also big bullies that chase other birds from their territory,”(San Jose Mercury News). The barred owls are very territorial and chase away the other spotted owls, and this results in the bullied spotted owls to not call for mates. Consequently, because of the decline in mating, the number of new spotted owls being born decreases, all because of the domineering barred owls. Also, this means that the barred owls are taking over the already-dwindling spotted owl habitat, and this could be a very serious problem.…

Mobbing behavior is an antipredator adaptation in which individuals of prey species cooperatively engage in harassing or attacking a potential intruder or predator. This behavior is most frequently exhibited in birds and can include; aerial swoops, physical attacks, the emittance of loud calls, or defecating on the predator. For an extended time, researchers believed that this behavior primarily served as a response to protect offspring against predators, in an attempt to relocate them away from nests. The costs of mobbing behavior account for the risk of engaging with predators and possibility of lethal consequences in participating individuals (Krams, Krama, & Igaune, 2006). In the presence of predators, species may alter their behavior…
