John Lewis’ words ended up on my poster because I have always been interested in civil rights and the people who fought for their what they deserved. When the movie Selma came out in 2014 I learned who John Lewis was. He stood out to me because he was so young and he inspires all of us. He is one of the few still alive and active today. I loved how much he seemed to be a minor character on the sidelines, but in fact was a huge part of the Selma march. What I realized when I went to the march was that for a long time I had admired activists from afar, but the march made me realize that I didn't want to just admire them, I wanted to join them. Being at the march really galvanized things that had been brewing in me forever. While I will still read, write, talk and think about history, the women's march and John Lewis, what I saw and heard it inspired me to want to go into politics to make a difference in the political world. When we stood there marching to the Washington Monument chanting “this is what a feminist looks like” that was when I realized I wanted to be more like this activist that I looked up to. I don't know exactly what the time has chosen me for, but I am ready for whatever it throws at
