In the last decade rape has become a growing issue. There have been many cases in the national news and that have gone viral on social media. Multiple ideas and solutions have tried to decrease the number of sexual assaults that happens all over the world; such as learning self-defense, never being alone at night, and not wearing revealing clothes etc. All these concepts share one key aspect; they are to help women. According to the rape crisis center every two minutes someone is sexually assaulted. Majority of people naturally associate the pronoun “she” with sexual assault. The reality is that rape is not gender specific, men are also victims of sexual assault.

He shared his story with Brogan Driscoll of the Huffington Post. Lennon had been physically hurt from the attack, needing multiple surgeries, but that wasn’t the worst of his problems. Lennon at first did not tell the police that he had been sexually assaulted, his mother had to convince him to. Lennon felt like he didn’t know where to go to get help, he felt alone. Eventually Lennon found a survivors counseling and was able to take to someone instead of isolated himself from the world, like he had been doing. Lennon had a hard time trusting people after his assault. He was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which controlled a lot of aspects in his life. Lennon says that he feels that all of his dreams and ambitions are gone, he has thought about suicide. To this day, Five years later, Lennon still sees a therapist and cannot work a full time job because of his PTSD. In reality is happens much more outside of prisons. Men have been sexually assaulted at work, at their own homes and when out with friends. Unfortunately, this issue doesn’t seem important because most victims keep the incidents to themselves. The victims are afraid to share their story and get help because of the backlash that may happen. According to Silent Suffering, a journal about male rape survivors, only around 4% of sexual assault victims report their assaults (2).
