Hymn for Equality In the era of 1960s to the 80s, the world of pop rock bands wouldn’t be the same if John Lennon never existed. Can we all just thank him for forming the legendary, shaggy-haired, suited-up group of The Beatles? The singer-songwriter created masterpieces during his time with the iconic English pop rock band. Some of the best rocked songs they had were, “Please, Please Me” and “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” Although like other bands, fame comes with challenges and their light had to die down. Following the band's break up, Sir John Lennon had a breakthrough with his solo career. The lyrical genius introduced to the world his best-known solo work from his Plastic Ono Band album, “Imagine.”

John Lennon started composing the song in his bedroom in Ascot while living with his wife, Yoko Ono. She influenced many his protest singles, and politically inclined solo pieces. Yoko is an artist as well and shared the same views with her husband. At the time they got together, she published an instructional book called the Grapefruit. The poem Cloud Piece, which is an excerpt from Yoko’s book, is where the inspiration came from. Lines like “Imagine the clouds dripping” and “Imagine your body spreading rapidly all over the world like thin tissue” sparked an idea in his head. They are simple pieces but expressed an art that was one of a kind. The words bear a resemblance to the song but John Lennon admitted he didn't give Ono credit until later on in his

In the book Anthem Equality’s primary motivation for conducting his experiments was to show that he was capable and intelligent enough to be a scholar. Equality is very intelligent and he knows he can help out his brothers and their world in many ways by the things he learned in the tunnel. I also think he is very biased and tired of the world he lives in when he was growing up and the world he lives in today. He is right to be motivated this way because it is normal for human beings to want to prove themselves and show that they are capable to do something that they believe they are worthy for.…

Looking on a broad spectrum I believe that Anthem is significant within our world today. In the United States and other individualist countries, we embrace our differences among one another and value people’s creativity and intelligence. Equality in Ayn Rand’s novel, Anthem, excludes himself from his collectivist society in order to evaluate his own beliefs and needs. In collectivist societies, such as the one Ayn Rand depicts, the well-being of the group over an individual’s desires are emphasized. An example of this is when Equality is happy after his encounter with the Golden One, “we are singing because we are happy,’ we answered the one of the Home Council who reprimanded us.…

The years 1963-1966 saw the pick of British rock and roll, a period guided by The Beatles. The Beatles started a revolution of pop music and made rock and roll the music that most people chose and they made Britain the centre of the music market of the time. The Beatles had been particularly effective because of their talent in writing lyrics of the songs that represented a new affirmation of the concept and image of the working-class. By being working-class image, writing their own songs, ignoring the larger adult audience in favour of appealing to youth alone, and expressing their opinions on society, the Beatles created the rudiments of a lasting image of the rock and roll musician – in pursuing these ideas, they became an idea themselves…

“All that is valuable in human society depends upon the opportunity for development accorded the individual”(Albert Einstein). In Ayn Rand’s Anthem, all that is valuable in human society is gone. What is left is a collectivist society that justifies, and keeps their power in dominating ways. With the overwhelming weight of this system, it is hard to imagine how the protagonist, Equality 7-2521, finds an out and a different way of living. Anthem shows a collectivist society that expresses only that and discrimination towards the individual.…

What about living in a world where there’s no stress about going to college, choosing your career, or listening to people drone on and on about their love life?
