John L. Parker's Once A Runner

Capturing the essence of what it means to be a competitive runner is not an easy task, but author John L. Parker Jr. does it with ease in his fiction novel Once A Runner. Published in 1978 by Cedarwinds Publishing Company and 272 pages in length, it brings the art of writing sports literature to an entirely new level. Renowned as an author, Parker has written for Outside, Runner’s World, and numerous other publications in addition to writing several other fictional books on the subject of running including Racing the Rain, one of my personal favorites. His writing style paints vivid pictures in the reader's mind and captures the essence of what it truly means to be a competitive runner. Reading this book is well known as a rite of passage on many competitive running teams and for good reason. Once A Runner tells the story of collegiate athlete Quentin Cassidy at the fictional Southeastern Florida University, based on the University of Florida. After Cassidy becomes suspended from the university and is prohibited from competing, he drops out of school and subjects himself to a brutal training program while being coached by Olympic gold medalist Bruce Denton. He plans to compete at the spring Southeastern Track and Field Relays meet against the best miler in the world, …show more content…

Everyone is unique, no one is exactly the same; and God created humans this way. He wants people to have their own success and to show perseverance to get through anything that comes up in their life. Because no one person is the same, everyone has a chance to show what they can bring to society. This was taken away from people in Germany because Hitler grouped the people together to make it seem as though they were all equal because of their religion. This also leads into my second teaching which is God trying to fix the brokenness of our society.…

Always running is the memoir of Luis Rodriguez, a Chicano who grew up in California in the 1960s and ’70s. Living in poverty, mistreated by teachers and the police, and surrounded by violence, Rodriguez quickly comes to believe that running with a gang is one of the only ways he can protect himself and have something to call his own. This coincides with the rise of Chicano gang culture in California. As young as 10, Rodriguez’s life centers on drugs, sex, fighting, and stealing, and it seems like many people in his life give up on him–in addition to him giving up on himself. Through the guidance of some educators at a community center, Rodriguez slowly begins to turn his life around and to become a youth activist in the Chicano movement.…

Depending on who was asked, Steve Prefontaine was either a brash firebrand or an inspirational genius. For his competitors, Prefontaine’s talent and style sent shivers down their spines and made the end result seem a foregone conclusion. For his fans, he had a strange combination of charisma and mystery that gave him an indescribable magnetism. The author of Prefontaine’s biography, Tom Jordan, summed this allure up when he prefaced his book by saying, “There was something about Steve Prefontaine that demanded attention” (Jordan 3). Standing out in the hot baking sun my heart pounds violently in my chest, my breath becomes deeper to calm my nerves that flood my brain, beads of sweat run down my sun baked face and plummet to the ground. Walking up to the waterfall line, I hear nothing but my heart pounding in my ears like two timpani’s in an instrumental band. Because of this, I grew accustomed to the ring of the victory bell and the satisfying validation that came from it. However, after many years of relentless training and competition, what has taught me most is not the split-second touch of victory, but the long stretch of perpetual failure. At the age of sixteen my athletic improvement became halted without explanation in a sport in which the sole purpose is to outperform the athlete you had been in the race before.…
