In his essay, “Students in Shock” (2012), John Keilmayer lists some of the causes for student shock. The first cause, says Keilmayer is that students suffer from poor family structure. Having poor family structure means there is not enough support from the family through the transition going to college. The student might not have enough guidance throughout their own household. Secondly, another cause that Keilmayer states is financial pressure. College students are more in shock because tuition rises rapidly per year and it is harder to maintain college loans to pay for school. The rise of tuition is causing students to stay at home to save money because the students can not afford it. Finally, the last cause is the various selection of majors
