He began in 1886, reporting to Fort Bayard, New Mexico Territory, where he was a part of the Troop L of the 6Th U. S. Cavalry. He was then commissioned as a major of United States Volunteers in 1898, and given the task of an ordnance officer. After being honorably discharged from the volunteers he then returned to his permanent rank of first lieutenant in 1899.
