Auteur theory is the theory of filmmaking in which the director is regarded as the key creative force in a film. Dubbed by American film critic Andrew Sarris in France during the late 1940’s, auteur theory was an outgrowth of the cinematic theories of Andre Bazin and Alexandre Astruc. This theory states that the director, who oversees all visual and audio elements of a film, is considered somewhat of an ‘author’ of a film more so than the writer of the screenplay. This means that visual elements such as blocking lighting, camera placement and angles as well as scene length deliver the message of the film, rather than the plot. To qualify as an auteur, a director must showcase technical competence, personal style, and interior meaning.…

Wells claimed that is only preparation for directing Citizen Kane was to watch John Ford’s Stagecoach (1939) forty times. Ford’s influence on the film is pronounced, but according to David Cook’s History of Narrative Film, it is equally clear that Welles was steeped in the major European traditions, especially those of German Expressionism and the Kammerspielfilm and French poetic realism. Kane’s narrative economy owes much to “the example of Ford, its visual texture is heavily indebted to the chiaroscuro lighting of Lang, the fluid camera of Murnau, the baroque misen-scene of von Sternber, and the deep-focus realism of Renoir” (Cook, 252). Welles’s also had remarkably talented collaborators. But, Welles’s greatest single technical asset in the filming of Kane, was his brilliant director of photography, Gregg Toland.…

Within auteur theory nearly all of the true impact of film as an art form comes the director as the person to give film “any distinctive quality” (Sarris 585). Sarris points out one of the premises of auteur theory as being the “distinguishable personality of the director” (Sarris 586). Furthermore he states that “the way a film looks and moves should have some relationship to the way a director thinks and feels” (Sarris 586). The importance of the personality of the director in auteur theory is only one premise of the theory as a whole however. Auteur theory emphasizes technique, personal style, and meaning allowing the director to become a technician, a stylist and an auteur (Sarris 587).…

The styles that he uses can be found in a lot of him movies and in the Shawshank Redemption I found a few of the shots that he used through the majority of the film. The first shot I noticed was an establishing shot, this is used in the first shot of a scene where the audience needs to know where this is taking place. It is a wide shot or an extreme wide shot.
