-Introduction John Herbert Dillinger, also known as the legendary “Public Enemy Number One,” grew up knowing just what he wanted to do with his life. He wanted to live a life of excitement and to just be himself, so what was he? According History.com “His exploits during the depth of the Great Depression made him a headline news celebrity and one of the most feared gangsters of the 20th century.” Yes, Dillinger was one of the most feared gangsters of the 20th century. Robbing banks, stealing cars, and having shoot outs with police. However He didn’t start off as a bank robber, he was a normal teen getting into normal teenage trouble. People who have met Dillinger seemed to admire him and never dreamed of him becoming a thief and organizing crime. And that’s not all that he did he even had his own gang. As he was driving the vehicle down the street an officer pulled him over and tried to arrest him. He got away by running from the officer. This led Dillinger to joining the Navy in an attempt to getting away for good. He knew that if he’d gone home he might have gotten caught. However that did not last, also according to History .com “He made it through basic training, but the regimented life of military service was not for him. While assigned to the U.S.S.
