John Green in his 2006 novel An Abundance of Katherines and Graeme Simsion in his 2013 novel The Rosie project establish that they can present similar ideas in different ways. Although Greens humorous and youthful setting and Simisons matured and significant settings and separate, the ideas and struggles which the protagonists are faced with are alike. This is where most of the novel takes place, however, the main characters from the book (Colin and Hassan) are from the main city. They stumble across the town when they see a sign which said "The grave of Arch Duke Fernandez". From there both characters were there to stay. Green shows that we can learn a lot from the way that the characters react to the setting. Don however, is set within the big city and stays there throughout the time in his novel. From there he visits fancy dining joints, out overseas but most of the time is spend at his university where he works as a professor. Both of these settings are deviating but serve the same purpose. The authors present these settings which imply they are different but in reality serve the same purpose. In Greens novel we can see that Colin and Hassan obviously do not fit in. The narrator even states "fail to fully apprehend certain facets of rural life". Transitions from city to rural life would make anybody feel out of their comfort zone. but by reading earlier in the novel we can see that Colin only had one friend to start off with. This shows that Colin was already failing to apprehend the certain facets of normal life. The same can be said for Don within The Rosie project. From the start he states that his only friends are a couple he works with at the university. Although he is fit, intelligent and successful he still has problems facing social situations. Both of the main protagonists within the books find it difficult to live within their settings. This may be the triggering factor as to why they started the 'Katherine project' and the 'Rosie project'. Both feel that they can't conform to society's normal settings, which leads them to find scientific ways to find a partner which is suitable for him.
