Sacrifice In John Green's The Fault In Our Stars

Since the dawn of the cavemen, love has been severely misunderstood and underestimated, and many have been claimed by its powerful ability to control your feelings and actions. John Green, on the other hand, has his own interpretation of love. He illustrates this interpretation in his literary work The Fault in Our Stars through his character Hazel Grace, whose days of discovering how the universe works were brought to an abrupt halt when she was diagnosed with Stage IV Thyroid cancer. Since then, her life has been a whirlwind of experimental drugs that could not cure her cancer, but simply slow the spread of it and prolong her life by an undetermined amount of time. This love is exemplified through not only Hazel, but also in several others throughout the story. No matter the situation, one’s loved ones always take priority. This thought can temporarily clear one’s mind and is always prioritized over bodily functions, current situations, or selfish needs and the happiness of these loved ones dominates all other emotions. Furthermore, when one suffers, so do those who love that person. Love forces these people to go out of their way, often to their own expense, to remedy the anguish of their loved ones, yet they feel content with their decisions if others are content too. These meticulous deductions by Green are not only epitomized in his literary work, but also extend to real life.
