Introduction I have heard of a brain surgery-taking place between Tommy Vladek and Sam. Tommy is brain dead, while his body remains totally functional, while Sam’s body is completely destroyed, but has perfect brain function. This surgery can cure all of Tommy’s behavioural problems, but the real concerns appear to be more ethical rather than the medical complications that may arise. The following dialogue is my interview with John Perry discussing this controversial procedure. The interview addresses the problem of personal identity, and aims to answer the key question: who will survive the operation?…

In Jacob Needleman’s, “The American Soul: Redicovering the Wisdom of the Founders.” He examines the difference between historical Indian morals, traditions, beliefs and common misconceptions relating to them. Needleman, an advocate for the learning and discussion of an important part of American culture, wants to recall Indian lifestyles and share them in the 21st century. Many Americans consider Indian culture to be stuck in the past, but many aspects of Iroquois legends are linked to events and issues prevalent in our modern world. Needleman discusses a ‘creation’ story, important figures, and a specific legend that all connect to modern day Christian ideals and beliefs.…

And who said arguing does not help, because sometimes it gets the true feelings out. Everyone wants to have a wonderful marriage, with their very own children, but can they support it? Are they meant for each other? Do they need mental help? A marriage and family therapist wants to help, so they listen and ask questions, similar to any other human being on this planet (“Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists: Occupational Outlook Handbook:: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics”).…

Unlike Gottman, earlier socialist and psychologist focused on mate selection; the personality of who marries who, where and whether an individual flourishes or not. Gottman looked at the bigger picture, what ways to make the relationship thrive. When taking a look at “The Love Lab,” and comparing Nathan Ackerman, a psychologist for both family and couple therapy, he took a shift towards aiming family therapy in order to create clinical approaches to clinical problems. As family and couple therapy psychologist would put it, "two neurotics can be happily married,” (Ackerman, 1982). In the end, whether we believe or follow Gottmans study or not, we must understand there is so much more to making a relationship.…

The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood, is a dystopian novel narrated by a handmaid named Offred who’s one purpose in life is to conceive children. Atwood is known for including bits of feminism in her work, but The Handmaid’s Tale takes things to the extreme. Feminism is an ideology that promotes the equality of both men and women, and it has been an issue for centuries. In Canada, women did not get the right to vote until the early 1920’s and women were not accepted into the workforce until the late 1950’s (Statcan). The Handmaid’s Tale represents feminism in an antifeminist environment through male supremacy, restrictions on women, and point of view.…

Its impact reaches out much further than the life of the ignorant person; it has the possibility of affecting family members, friends, and even more people beyond this. Love is commonly associated with ignorance and this is dangerous. Gatsby did not live a life of his own, only one for Daisy. Tom and Daisy both did not think of how their outside relationships would affect other people, and Myrtle did not only ignore the effects on other people but also allowed for herself to be in an abusive relationship. None of these people ended up in a happy ideal relationship in the end of the book, none of it happened how they thought it would.…
