The world today is growing exponentially as technology and minds are being

developed. These developments, made primarily from the optimistic viewpoint for the world, has

although, brought upon many problems. Among the growths led by these developments also

include the growing crime rates. The increasing crimes have spread extensively and

rapidly leaving no ideal place behind where its vicious effects have not spread its branches.

From murders and rape to theft and trafficking, the world has been a spiteful place to live in. But

a long ago raised question is still in debate: whether it is the world that has been malicious due

to these criminal births or it is actually the same world that makes an individual a criminal.

scandalous path. John Gotti, as many others (in my opinion), was persuaded towards crime due

to environmental circumstances. His involving in crime since childhood is the main cause he

followed that initiated pathway which was the result of his family state of affairs, the upbringing

surrounding and the peer influence that all signifies the different environmental factors.

One’s family with whom one is brought up is a very credible source from which an

individual can be judged. The members of a family share a similar values because the thought of

one individual replicates to juniors as he/she is brought up in the family. Those ethics that family

teach to their members form their behavior and attitude. Hence, the good valued families

manufacture moral individuals and the contrary to it brings ill valued individuals. As Caitlin M.

the young members during his/her upbringing. Unfortunately, Gotti’s family lacked in both the

aspects. As the article of John Gotti in “UXL Biographies” reads, his family was very poor with

a lot of family members, him being “the fifth of the thirteen children”, leading to deficiency and

misconduct. His father was very abusive and thus he grew up seeing his foul attitude which even

he gained it in the “way” through replication. As the saying goes, “Poverty is the parent of

revolution and crime”(Aristotle), the poor economic state of his family, his want of getting rid of

the deprivation and his malicious manner and values led him to involve in various gang crimes

since his teenage period including robbery and trafficking. Therefore, this unfavorable family

affairs and upbringing atmosphere led Gotti to the field of crime where he stabled his name quite

firmly.

As the saying “Show me your friend and I will tell you who you are” goes, an

Charles Manson’s early life was very similar to this. This terrible way of living can cause someone to do extremely obscene and grotesque things as an adult. Charles Manson’s life was like this, and as a result of his upbringing, he made some horrendous choices--such as convincing others to commit awful crimes--and was found guilty for the murders of the Tate and LaBianca families. Manson’s case became very public and well known in its time.…

In this essay I will reflect on the few assumptions and understandings I had about crime and see how they have changed. Upon arriving at De Montfort University to study Criminology and Criminal Justice, I had average knowledge about crime and punishment i.e. insight into biological and psychological perspectives of crime having studied A-level Law and Psychology beforehand. However I did expect to delve so deep into the history and other aspects of Criminology during this first semester. During A-level Law I have read many case studies of murder, manslaughter, GBH, rape etc. I found the main reasons behind committing these crimes were usually motives for revenge, loss of control, hate, rage, and biological inheritance of 'criminal genes ' such as Monoamine oxidase A which makes individuals more prone to exert violence.…
