Patriotism is what describes a person that can stand up for their country no matter what blocks them from their goal. It requires that the person do things out of their comfort zone and take a step out of it. This requires the person to always try to do their best for their country. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy showed this in both his presidency and his time in the military.
John F. Kennedy served in the Navy before becoming the president of the United States. He served four years, from 1941 to 1945 in the Navy. He served right until the end of World War Two. He showed courage in the Navy since he had volunteered to serve his country. Even though he was one of many other young men to join the fight against the Axis he was one of the few that got a high rank. Kennedy had the privilege of being promoted to a junior-grade lieutenant. He had his own boat called the PT-109. Among all of these great things Kennedy accomplished he was given a Purple Heart and a Marine Corps and Navy medal. Both medals were presented to him when his boat was struck by a Japanese destroyer when he sustained injuries in the rescue of his crew. …show more content…

The major event of the Cold War during his presidency was the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Cuban Missile Crisis was when two American U-2 spy planes flew over Cuba and saw that the Soviets had built nuclear missile sites there. Kennedy met with his advisors for several days to discuss the matter. Kennedy was told that there were a lot of different things he could do to address the situation. An example was the recommendation to set up a naval blockade so the Soviets couldn’t get into Cube. Kennedy didn’t know how the Soviets would respond to this and tried to limit himself to the options that wouldn’t lead to a nuclear war and that would keep his country
