He won, and was entered into the 80th Congress in January 1947, at the age of 29. He was reelected in 1948 and 1950 to the House of Representatives. A couple years later in 1952 Kennedy ran for Senate and beat Republican Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. As if things were not going well enough for him already, in 1953 he married a beautiful young journalist, Jacqueline Lee Bouvier. Shortly after his marriage, Kennedy had to undergo a painful operation on his back. Kennedy then created a naval blockade. After a two week standoff, Khrushchev and Kennedy came to an agreement. Kennedy promised not to invade their land and to remove missiles that were placed in Turkey, and Khrushchev agreed to dismantle their Cuban missile sites. Through their differences, Kennedy won one of his biggest affairs by getting the nuclear test ban treaty signed with Khrushchev and Britain's Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. Even with this accomplishment, Kennedy's desire to stop the spread of communism ended with the involvement of Vietnam. Kennedy was not able to achieve everything he claimed he would in his proposed legislation.
