John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917, to Joseph and Rose Kennedy. John, commonly called Jack by friends and family, suffered from many illnesses as a baby with the worst coming at age three when Kennedy contracted scarlet fever. After about a month, he miraculously recovered. That same year, the Kennedy family moved from John’s birthplace of Brookline, Massachusetts, to a neighborhood just outside of Boston. Like his older brother, Joseph, Jr., Kennedy attended Choate Rosemary Hall, a boarding school specifically for teenage boys, in Connecticut. During the summer, the Kennedy family would gather at their summer home on Cape Cod where they could engage in lavish activities, such as, sailing. In 1936, John Kennedy began his studies at Harvard University and even secured a spot on the Harvard Crimson football team (Kennedy was very athletic and played many sports during high school). The following year, Joseph Kennedy, Sr., was elected as the United States Ambassador to England causing the family to move to England, excluding Joseph, Jr. and John, as they were in school. Although he had never had political interests before, his father’s new position peaked Kennedy’s curiosity in European politics and world affairs.
