Discovery leads to unique renewed perceptions and new understandings, within Jane Harrison’s ‘ Rainbow’s End’ and Gwen Harwood’s ‘ Father and Child’. Harrison and Harwood present Gladys and Dolly from Rainbow’s End and the child and father from Father & Child as characters who convey the aspects of discovery of with the use of both symbolism and other language techniques. Both texts reflect on a feminine and a father and child context using the protagonists. In Rainbow’s…
Imagine yourself in a world where with every action completed, a question was raised. Does the outcome of that action get devoted to the good of society, or does it get bestowed upon the completers and they must accept the consequences of it by themselves? This debate between individualism and collectivism has made philosophers and politicians alike ponder for generations. However, it’s not uncommon for writers to try and uncover the secrets of this timeless question, and Mark Doty does so well in his poem, “A Display of Mackerel”. Doty expresses his feelings at length about the two ideologies and what he feels humans’ ultimate goals should be in their existence.…

Throughout the novel, these literary devices identify the women’s inner struggles, their demons that they constantly live with. For Lily it is her insecurity, May deals with her inability to cope with suffering, and Deborah suffered from depression. In Sue Monk Kidd’s, The Secret Life of Bees, the author indirectly characterizes Lily as insecure to display Lily's longing to fit in, especially when it comes to femininity. For example, this insecurity is revealed when Lily looks at a picture of her deceased mother, Deborah.…
When looking at contemporary literature from a philosophical point of view, one can often find truths that give us a greater understanding and awareness of our surroundings, literature allows us to expand our knowledge in a deeper, more connected way. Similar to this, Cassandra Clare, a poet from Tehran, Iran, once said that “Only the very weak-minded refuse to be influenced by literature and poetry.” In that light, Kaveh Akbar, a poet also from Tehran, shares a similar philosophy on literature exemplifying the idea that place can shape and influence one's truths. Akbar epitomizes this ideology in his poem, “River of Milk,” which argues that in order to experience real truths, one must go through the process and experience of breaking down and re-evaluating parts of themselves and others and through these truths, a society becomes more united and more connected than before. Early on in the poem, the speaker says “...my body burned /…
“Fishhawk” was the first poem of the Classic of Poetry, the earliest poetry collection of East Asia (p.1322). In contrast to many poems in the “Airs of Domain” that propagated Confucianism, “Fishhawk” is a simple love poem. The poem revolves around a young man who was “tormented by his desire for a girl”(p.1322). While this poem is labeled as a “romantic folk song”(p.1322), the good use of literary elements, syntax, and language added a bit of tint to the love story.…
The narrator of the poem, “To a Mouse” appears to be a man, yet shares different views than most men through his defense and care for the mouse. In Of…
This also shows the reader how helpless and defenseless the speaker is to the girl. The speaker says “The mouse which once hath broken out of trap is seldom ‘ticed with trustless bait”(5-6) This portrays how he is starting to see the situation…
Poetry is a very beautiful and unique form of literature, but it often is given a bad reputation. The main reason being is people overanalyze it, instead of taking in the beauty of it. Billy Collins’s poem “Introduction of Poetry” explains how people overanalyze and take away from the beauty of a poem. The speaker suggests ways of reading poetry that allow the reader to understand the poem, but not take away from the beauty of it. Billy Collins quotes “I ask them to take a poem / and hold it up to the light / like a color slide” (lines 1-3) meaning take the poem that is being read and analyze it, but do not analyze it to the point you loose sight of the beauty or “colors”.…
“What the Mirror Said” by Lucille Clifton (page 202) narrates a girl convincing herself of her own worth. The repeated line, “listen,” indicates that she’s pleading with herself. The final line, “mister with his hands on you / he got his hands on some / damn / body!” concludes that this woman feels like she’s special and complex, and not “anonymous.”…
Emily Montemayor Mrs. Stecker AP Literature & Composition 1 February 2016 Thou Blind Man’s Mark A burning desire can be the greatest motivator and the reason for one’s downfall. In the poem, “Thou Blind Man’s Mark” by Sir Philip Sidney, desire is the main theme, addressed in many ways and uses different techniques to exaggerate the complex attitude the speaker has towards desire. It is often personified as if it holds power over the speaker and he speaks of the hatred he has towards desire and uses a shift in the poem to exemplify an ironic tone.…
There are multiple similarities shared between both the poem, A Work of Artifice, by Marge Piercy, and the novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood. The main similarity is in the overall theme present in both pieces, more specifically the theme of power and dominance. This is not to belittle the significance of other similarities between the two, such as their parallel views on feminism, along with sexuality and control. The novel and poem resemble each other in numerous ways; they both shed light on bigger meanings and issues present in the world. The theme of power and superiority is very evident in the two pieces.…
“For the Anniversary of My Death” and “The Nail” are considered as the main turning point in W.S Merwin’s use of stylistic approach to poetry. In almost all of his poems, he virtually uses no punctuation of any kind as his choices of words are simpler. Still present in these poems are the poet’s fascination with death, the spiritual, ruination, and the natural. These poems capture the facets of Merwin’s 1960s style and the use of imagery. They are also presented in stanzas, which are irregular, but given the link between the stanzas, the poems suggest that an inverted sonnet was used by the poet.…
1. In “The Black Cat,” the narrator says, “There is something in the unselfish and self-sacrificing love of a brute, which goes directly to the heart of him who has frequent occasion to test the paltry friendship and gossamer fidelity of man.” The narrator states how his relationships with other people are small and meager. He implies humans are not trustworthy nor are they dependable. In comparison to humans, the author is trying to express how animals are sympathetic creatures who love their owners in an unselfish and self-sacrificing way.…
On the other hand, Donne in “The Flea” is more cunning in trying to persuade his lover by using love symbolism. He first dramatized the symbol of their love in the flea by symbolizing the flea as their conjugal bed due to mixing of their blood, and how killing it would be desecration of their love. But later when the women kills the flea, the poet immediately diverts his argument in saying that if killing the flea was not a big deal, the act of sex should not be too. Instead of consoling her directly to not be afraid, the poet used witty words to resolve the conflict in his lover’s mind for premarital…
