All they knew at the time was it belong to a kid. They used a technique called bomb pulse that was able to predict his birth year between 1958 and 1962. This along with other forensic techniques allowed them to finally solve the case of John Doe 41 years later. In order to solve a John Doe case they have to look for things on the body or even perhaps a piece of the body in order to possible figure out whom the John Doe is. In the above case of the missing John Doe using the bomb pulse technique it allowed them to figure out it was a child and about how old he would have been. Then using the teeth it allow them to finally match it with dental records and solve the case. Many times it is hard or even impossible to figure out who the victim is, this may be due to massive head trauma, submergence in water for long periods of time, decapitation, and disfigurement. The first steps in identifying to unknown subject is if they are wearing clothing, they will search for ID, bank card, perhaps and appointment card, or engraved jewelry, check the body for identifying marks such as unusual scars or tattoos. Depending on the crime will depend in the type of evidence that will be collected. For instance, let’s look at the case of Pamela Shelley whom died en route to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head in 2001. She was found in her home in Texas that she had shared with her boyfriend. She had moved her and her two children in with him shortly after leaving her husband. They had ruled her death a suicide. However, the case was later reopened because the officer that had initially responded to the call felt that the suicide ruling was wrong so he reopened the case. He through forensic science was able to show that due to the angle of the bullet that there was no way it could have been a self-inflicted wound.
