Benefits of Technology Do you consider modern technology advances a positive direction for us to tread or a negative ideal towards a world with less interpersonal communication? Many would argue these advances have more pros than cons. Such as, Kris Axtman, a staff writer at The Christian Science Monitor, in “’r u online?’: The Evolving Lexicon of Wired Teens”, where he discussed how technology is effecting our youth’s communication (247-49). “Note to Selfie”, by American journalist John Dickerson, illustrated the importance of recording our journey through life (255-58). However, there are people concerned that, by allowing new channels of communication, privacy can be easily violated. Truly, once information becomes posted online, event on a private site, it’s at risk of being uncovered; but if there is sensitive data, such as a social security number, it should never be posted on an unsafe website anyways. We have various ways of protecting ourselves from today’s data-hackers by encrypting messages and payment information such as PayPal and Apple Pay. Ultimately, there is nothing to fear as most companies have strong security measures to ensure that customer information remains private. Online communication is more beneficial than harmful for us; online, it’s easier to confide in people and there is a longer period of time to react and respond appropriately. When I was in early adolescence, neither surrounded by people my own age nor in public school for health reasons, all of my friends were online and lived in different cities, or even states. At that time I was struggling with social anxiety; despite this, I fought through moments of depression and anxiety by having personal online conversations with my friends through instant-messenger. Without the pressure of someone staring straight at me, awaiting a response or judging me with their facial expression, I didn’t feel intimidated by saying whatever I needed to say. In a similar experience, Axtman interviewed Mary Anne Thomas, a Houston mother, about her oldest son. She stated that her son is ordinarily shy around girls, but that he suddenly becomes comfortable and confident when engaging with them online (248).
