John Deere Social Responsibility

John Deere is a prestigious corporation that manufactures agricultural equipment. Three core company values found in its Corporate Social Responsibility report are innovation, community, and environment. Its value of innovation is shown in its funding in educational programs, comprising of 21% of John Deere Foundation’s 2014 total contributions. In the same year, it contributed over $1 million and more than 18,000 volunteer hours for STEM programs such as FIRST Robotics that help students to innovate. The Sowing Futures project is a program that empowers the John Deere community in Horizontina, Brazil. It provides young people leadership and vocational training to improve life in poor living conditions. John Deere addresses water usage problems in Mexico by implementing a process that recycles wastewater from cooling towers. Water consumption has fallen by almost half and drinkable water consumption is almost eliminated. Some of John Deere’s effective initiatives are only implemented on the local level and thus may have a limited scope of impact. For instance, the aforementioned Sowing Futures project has yet to be replicated in other impoverished communities. The report mentions that its L-Series Skidders reduce fuel consumption, noise, and waste. Its 7R Series tractors reduce consumption through life cycle engineering. While the technological innovation is impressive, John Deere would need the help of its customers to carry out its conservational objectives based on the development of efficient products. It would be helpful to provide more details as to how John Deere can inspire its customers to participate in its conservational efforts by purchasing its new
