John Dalton (1766-1844) is the scientist who came up with the atomic theory. This theory explains several concepts that are relevant in the observable world the composition of a pure gold necklace, what makes the pure gold necklace different than a pure silver necklace, and what occurs when pure gold is mixed with pure copper. Before discussing the atomic theory, this article explains the theories that Dalton used as a basis for his theory: the law of conservation of mass and the law of constant composition.Dalton observed that reactions occur in exact amount of reactants.

In 1803, Dalton published his Law of Partial Pressures, which states that in “a mixture of non-reacting gases, the total pressure is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of the individual gases” (Famous). His interest in gases led him to the study of atoms. In 1808 he published A New System of Chemical Philosophy, which contained Dalton’s Law. Dalton’s Law states that “if two elements form more than one compound between them, then the ratios of the masses of the second element which combine with a fixed mass of the first element will be ratios of small whole numbers”…

Ernest Rutherford’s model of the atom suggested the atom had a small, compact nucleus surrounded by a cloud of almost weightless electrons. Bohr proposed adding to the model the new idea of quanta put forth by Max Planck in 1901. That way, electrons existed in set levels of energy, that is, at set distances from the nucleus. His model was a huge leap forward in making theory fit experimental evidence that other physicists had found over time.…

2.5 – Nuclear Physics What was initially known about the model of the atom before Thomson and Rutherford conducted their experiments? The first model of the atom is thought to have come from two Greek philosophers - Democritus and Leucippus – in the fifth century BC. These two philosophers believed that everything was made up of matter, and that you could half a given portion of matter (and keep halving the product) and eventually be left with something that couldn’t be halved again: the atom. They believed that all atoms were imperishable and could not be split apart.…

Rutherford did an experiment where he hit a thin piece of gold foil with alpha particles and was able to see the alpha particles pass through the gold foil. Alpha particles are positively charged due to the losing their electrons. This made Rutherford realized two things. He realized that atoms are made mostly made of empty space and that the positively charged particles, called a proton, were all packed together in a place called the nucleus. Rutherford made a model that fits his new atomic theory.…
