He wanted to appear to people as a philanthropist. He helped launch the field of biomedical research funding scientific investigators that resulted in vaccines for diseases like meningitis and yellow fever. He promoted the causes of education nationally, including all sexes, races and religions. Also, he was known to have created the University of Chicago, which between a decade became one of the world’s leading universities. He also donated $600,000 a few years later. From his first paycheck he gave away about 10% of his money to a local church and donated over $500M to different causes. He contributed $22.4M to the Red Cross and the United War Work Fund. Also, when his wife deceased, he donated $74M to honor his wife’s charity work. He helped China create its first proper medical school.
