John D. Rockefeller was born on July 8, 1839 in Richford, NY. His father was a traveling salesman. When he was a young boy, he earned money by selling candy and raising turkeys. He also did some odd jobs for his neighbors. His family moved to Cleveland, OH in 1853. He attended high school then went to a commercial college to learn bookkeeping. When he was 16, he worked as an office clerk at a Cleveland commission firm in 1855. In 1859 he and a partner made commission for themselves. Also in 1859, the first oil was drilled in Pennsylvania.

In 1864, Rockefeller married Laura Spelman, whose father was a merchant and abolitionist activist. They had four daughters and a son. However, only three of the four daughters survived to adulthood.
