My parents often told me about how their parents use to drink and they were never around. This played a key role when picking my books because I wanted to hear firsthand about how alcohol could ruin and destroy a life. Furthermore, when looking at the human liberty selection I didn’t want to pick a book that dealt with mental illness because I’m already familiar with that topic and wanted to explore something outside of my comfort zone. While queer themes may not be explicit in the rest of his works, many of his queer characters exist in novels that are not considered to be queer.
