John Carpenter The Thing Review

Improved Essays
I could ramble on with this review and waste your time, but do you really need to be told to watch John Carpenter's other masterpiece (the first being Halloween) The Thing? The film is pure perfection in every form and it's something that will live on for generations. I never personally tackled reviewing The Thing on this site before, because I just don't see the point. Us horror fans know that The Thing is a masterpiece, so what exactly can be said about it that hasn't been mentioned a million times before? Nothing, to be perfectly honest with you. If you by chance live in a tiny, tiny hole and have not had the luxury of witnessing this brilliant horror film, well, then now is your chance! Scream Factory releases the definitive version of The Thing on Blu-ray and you bet your ass it is worth picking up!

It has fantastic special effects by Rob Bottin and an unforgettable soundtrack by XXX. The films will have you on edge of your seat, wondering who may or may not be human, it features a fantastic jump scare and the ending is hands down, one of the best endings in a horror film. The movie is perfect. Review done.

Blu-ray Opinion

This isn't the first time The Thing has come out on Blu-ray, but it most definitely will be the last copy you'll need to ever pick up. The new 2K transfer is supervised by the almighty cinematographer Dean Cundey, so you know that the version you are watching is the way it was meant to be seen. Some people will complain of a blue tint here and there that wasn't in the other Blu-ray release, but this is the correct look. The transfer is purely phenomenal.

The disc also boasts three audio options, with the new 4.1 option being the best way to hear the film. Recreated from the original XXX, the 4.1 option skips the centre speaker, but fills your other speakers with screams, music and alien

Where as I normally end up arguing against why a film should be considered a horror film, this time I'm going other way and argue why Lightning Bug is a Horror film. As I stated in Horror, My Definition, a Horror film is a film that used dread and horror, while trying to evoke negative emotions. Lightning Bug does that for me, upon first viewing I wasn't that impressed and disregarded is horror elements. Instead focusing on how its a Coming of Age Drama. But after viewing the film never really settled and has passed through my mind on several occasions and when I reflect on the film it's dark and haunting undertones that remain.…

Writer-helmer-editor David Lowery (“Ain't Them Bodies Saints”) delivers one of the most rewarding movies of the year, a psychedelic, indie-style ghost drama that is beautiful and haunting in equal proportions. Resorting to long shots, which stimulate even more our curiosity, and perfectly composed settings, the director opts for a dead-cold stillness that characterizes an intelligent, layered tale related with a profound sense of loss, despair, and eternity. By the time we are introduced to C (Casey Affleck) and M (Rooney Mara), a young married couple who just moved into a suburban house in Dallas, we are also presented with a sentence by the acclaimed English writer Virginia Woolf that says: “whatever hour you woke there was a door shutting”.…

I wen't into this film mostly blind. I knew it was a Rom-Com and that it had zombies. Funny thing, while watching this film I kept thinking "This feels a lot like Infestation", which turns out is because it's by the same director, Kyle Rankin. Looking back at it my only real issue with Infestation was that it was trying to be a zombie film without the zombies. Night of the Living Deb fixes that by being about zombies.…

Franco Zeffirelli did a fantastic job portraying Shakespeare’s vision of Romeo and Juliet (1968 film). The horrible tragedy of the fate of two teenagers due to the consequence of an unreasonable feud between their two families, the Montague and the Capulets. A timeless story of young forbidden love that cannot and will not be stopped by anything other than death. Romeo and Juliet has always been a story of a deep passionate and pure love that we have all wished for, of course not to the same end. I believe the play to have succeeded on the level of storytelling and having the audience become emotionally invested in the outcome.…

The constant isolation, paranoia and distrust between the characters was not only representative of the political unrest of the 1970s, including the terror experienced in the Cold war, but it also served to highlight the distrust and isolation of humans on a personal level. Isolation is therefore represented as a significant catalyst to the deterioration of humanity itself. Even though Carpenter understood that his contextual audience did not desire this criticism in a time of social and political recovery, The Thing is now praised as a revolutionary film specifically in the science fiction horror genre, carving the way for many other successful modern films that now use similar conventions (Addison,…

However, even with it cranked up higher than normal, there was no distortion to be found. Features are a bit on the light side with the aforementioned half-hour interview session with various individuals such as directors Siegel and McGehee, Haysbert and cinematographer Greg Gardiner being the highlight. There was also a commentary with the directors, some deleted scenes with commentary, a short film by the directors David Siegel and Scott McGehee, a pretty good sized booklet, and finally some trailers. It certainly isn't as featured packed as some releases, but the video presentation alone makes up for any issues I had with…

What? Not an alien horror, you say? Well, even though the alien doesn’t have a massive impact throughout the movie, I would still quantify this movie as an alien horror. This movie is the most modern of the three, coming out in 2013, and the visuals reflect that. The found-footage style of the movie, consisting of shots from cameras recording the mission for posterity, only adds to the suspense as it was pulled off well.…
