Pros And Cons Of Normative Leadership Theory

Nearly all leadership theories can be categorized as either descriptive or normative. Descriptive theories illustrate the actions of leaders; while normative theories attempt to define appropriate actions for leaders. This paper will focus on normative leadership theories and the moral principles on which these theories are built. Normative theories also offer parameters for ethical behavior in management situations (Johnson, 2016). Transformational Leadership Theory (TLT) is the primary focus of this paper. For comparison purposes three other normative theories will be discussed. The three theories are servant, authentic, and aesthetic. Additionally, Dr. John C. They are viewed as role models and are concerned with providing adequate support to their subordinates. Development of personnel on an individual basis is important to followers of TLT. Transformational leaders are inspirational and motivate their teams to a higher level of performance. Idea generation is encouraged as a way to address problems (Johnson, 2016). Dr. Maxwell describes transformational leaders as ultra-perceptive. He believes transformational leaders have the ability to feel, believe, and do extraordinary things. According to Maxwell, transformational leaders also possess the ability to inspire others through dynamic communication (Azusa Street, 2016).
Pros and Cons The unique ability to formulate a vision with direction, goals, and improvement is one of the primary benefits of transformational leaders. These leaders also possess the talent to communicate their vision in a manner that is conducive to “buy in” at all levels. Passion, motivation, and energy are all effective characteristics utilized to elevate team performance (Kokemuller, n.d.). Drawbacks of TLT can include a lack of attention to detail. Transformational leaders may struggle if they are not supported by individual with organizational, detail –oriented skillsets.
