John C. Maxwell's Developing The Leader Within You

Improved Essays
A role model of mine, John C. Maxwell, once said in his book, Developing the Leader Within You, “Everyone talks about it; few understand it. Most people desire to cultivate a high capacity for it; few actually do.”. I acquired leadership through a team sport that changed my life, and put me in many situations that shaped me.

The best thing that has ever happened to me has been the ability to play softball. I started at five years old. Being apart of a team was always something I loved. A team is a family outside of a family. One of the teams I was on was called the Oklahoma Twisters. Our team was fantastic. One memory that really made me realize how impactful I was to this team was when I was not able to be there for one day of

My most significant leadership experience would be when I was in the Girls Varsity Tennis Team. I had been in the tennis team during my highschool years, for 2 years. During that time I learned a lot about being a leader, such as what it means to lead others, and what qualities a leader should have. When I first started playing tennis I started at the position on 2nd doubles, to me I took it as that I was not good enough to play against an opponent by myself on the court. Which was entirely true, because when I began playing I was not any good whatsoever.…

As a sophomore, I had to opportunity to get lots of playing time in varsity games and being a young player on the team, getting big playing time, I felt I had to take the leadership role in my sophomore class. Now that I am a senior on the team, I feel more of that weight on my shoulders. Being on the court most of the time, I feel it’s part of my duty, on and off the court, to be a leader for the girls. Keeping them serious in practice to just being someone they look up to when they need guidance, I feel those situations is what really taught me the leadership qualities. I’ve also inherited the leadership quality my senior year when I was chosen to be the student section leader.…

Leadership is portrayed in The Hunger Games, Coach Carter, Remember The Titans and Avatar through different methods. But in all four films there are effective leaders that are able to overcome challenges and put themselves at risk to create change. True leaders don’t need to have a great technical or intellectual capacity, true leaders just need to have the right attitude and behaviour that relates to the people surrounding and following them. Leadership is not about being served by others but it is the role and the opportunity to serve other people. True leaders know who they are and what they stand for, and are also able to say “do as I do” rather than “do as I say”, because they lead by example.…

One leader whom I admire the most is my old cross country and track coach, Jim Koterba. Mr. Koterba, I still call him that from first having him as a Social Studies teacher in middle school, had one of the most challenging jobs I could image from a leadership perspective. Most people think of business’s and corporations when they think of management, but many forget that those guiding our youth everyday are just as engaged in leadership than any corporate executive. I’ve been able to view Mr. Koterba’s leadership from many different perspectives in my last 8 years of life, from a student in his classroom, to a runner in his running club and eventually cross country team, and even as a friend. The first think one needs to know to understand a leader is his character, and to understand Mr. Koterba’s character you need look no further…

I have always considered myself a leader especially because of the environment I grew up in. The ability to become a leader amongst my friends, family, and my organization are all attributed to the choices and effects on other people that I had growing up. When it comes to my organization I have no choice but to be a leader, you can’t just settle for being a manager because people may not truly respect you. As a leader in my organization, I am able to influence not only my supervisors, athletes, as well as my friends. When it comes to influencing my supervisors, I am the connection between the athletes on the team and them because I am in closer age.…

I held a leadership position, team captain, every year I played football. As captain I learned even more that true leaders always lead by example. This is best explained by a personal experience, a football game in which I began arguing with a referee over what I considered a poor call. He then asked for the captain of the team, and as I was the only one on the field, I pointed to myself. He said “Well tell yourself to calm down.’’…

I have been doing some research and improving on my skills as a leader. Becoming a leader is not a talent, job or position. Leadership can be rewarding and difficult at the same time. In today’s society, “the kind of leadership necessary to move social movements forward is very different from the type of leadership required in a military setting, especially on the battlefield. A more sharpened focus on leadership processes versus individual leader traits and behaviors deepens our understanding of the complexities and interactive nature of leadership” (Komives, Lucas and McMahon 2013, 46).…

Prior to the start of the team dynamics class, leadership, to me, was just a way for leaders to inspire people to follow them and motivate them to achieve a certain goal. As the class went on, I realized how important leadership is and how it is critical for people to succeed and get to higher positions in the business world. In addition, I learned that the actions of the leaders can influence a person significantly, whether it is in positive or negative ways. I developed a table of my leadership principles in the beginning of class, which includes honesty, passionate, courageous, ambition, being a role model, and the ability to motivate people to reach goals. As I learned more about leadership, I realized how there are also other principles…

Introduction “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” — Vince Lombardi As I reflect on my leadership journey, I become more convinced with Vince that leaders are not born leaders, but are a result of a conscious effort to be one. While serving in various institutions in leadership positions, I have seen myself emerge to those positions through my hard work and skills rather than just having been assigned to it. Various factors like experience, training, mentorship, conscious practice and even failure have contributed in developing my leadership abilities.…
