John Hinckley Jr. Many people have obsessions over different things. Depending on the extent of the obsessions, they can cause people to do outrageous things. Some of these outrageous things can be anything from having OCD to trying to commit suicide or to even try to assassinate the President. Obsessions have different effects on different people. John Hinckley, Jr., an oddball even in his own family, attempted to assassinate the President Ronald Reagan in 1982, with a crazy motive and a shocking outcome because of his obsession. Born in Ardmore, Oklahoma, on May 29, 1955, John Warnock Hinckley Jr. became infamous for his attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan (John) in 1981. During the summer of that same year, John had seen the movie “Taxi Driver” more than fifteen times (O’ Reilly). This is when his obsession with Jodie Foster began. Jodie Foster, born on November 19, 1962, is a well known actress. Her role as a teenage prostitute in the movie “Taxi Driver”. John started writing to his parents about a fictional girlfriend he created within his head named Lynn Collins, based on Foster. He moved back and forth from Colorado to California for a while, then finally stayed in Colorado where he returned to Texas Tech for seven years (Linder). At 2:25, when President Reagan walked outside, Hinckley yelled, “President Reagan! President Reagan!” The crouched like a marksman and fired six shots (Davis). Of the six bullets that were shot, four men were injured. Ronald Reagan was struck in the left chest, Press Secretary James Brady in the left temple, Officer Thomas Delahanty in the neck, and Security Agent Timothy J. McCarthy in the stomach (Linder). Reagan was pushed into the vehicle and was rushed to the hospital to be treated. Brady is now almost completely blind and has spent his life in a wheelchair since the incident (Davis). Delahanty was left with permanent nerve damage and was forced to retire (Davis). A year after the attempt made by Hinckley, his trial began where he was given the verdict of “not guilty” for reason of insanity in 1982
