John Briley Character Analysis Essay

Character Analysis on Officer Donovan Briley We learn about the world and its people with all their differences everyday. Everyone has differences and some just become more well known than others. Officer Donovan Briley was one of those lucky people. He became known during the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993 were the aircraft, Super Six One, was shot down. Throughout his lifetime, readers are able to see that he was a determined, loving and personable man who cared deeply for everything that he was involved in. Officer Briley’s personality and qualities never faded away, even to his last breath.
One part of Officer Briley’s personality that astonished people was his determination. Even when he and his team neared their imminent death, he was determined to keep them alive. In the quote, “He yanked back so the whole aircraft shook,”(Bowden 79), he fought against the helicopter for his team’s mortality. Furthermore he was determined to serve his country with all his might. He was dependable on missions, for one. Many men are pleased with that because that means in stressful and anxiety filled situations they can rely on him to get them out of it. He was copilot of Super Six One and he was the man that Elvis, the head pilot, told to “pull the PCLs off line or what?”(Bowden 79). The head pilot was relying on the copilot to get them out of a sticky situation. When Bull was not on the field and was relaxing with the others, he was admired. One man, Mike Durant, was one of those who admired him. He thought of Bull when the helicopter crashed, the second person he thought of, actually, “Durant thought about his friends, Elvis and Bull,”(Bowden 87). Almost all the men admired him. Here is what his daughter had to
