The John Brown Papers belong to Dr. John Brown, Tita’s other love interest in Like Water for Chocolate, whose love was never returned. These papers serve as his journal, and they catalogue his feelings and struggles throughout the novel, and his eternal love for Tita de la Garza. Many entries were written during the time he and Tita were together, but a few take place during the twenty two year timeskip between the last two chapters of the novel. John Brown’s character is hardly ever explored in the novel, which is regrettable because his love for Tita was very strong and he was very interesting and garnered much interest from me when I read the story. I could relate well to him because we had many similar characteristics, and I had hoped to …show more content…
Much of the writing was done by hand, so it would make sense that John would not have amazing typing skills. This improves throughout the journal.
This first entry occurs several months before John is set to meet Tita. The “something” he speaks of at the end is referring to her, as if he had some kind of precognition that he would meet her. I only assumed this; sometimes people are known to have a feeling when they are close to meeting the love of their lives.
In each entry, John Brown’s sign-off phrase is different, in order to express the different feelings he was most likely experiencing during the writing of each unique entry.
Entry 2:
John Brown uses second person throughout the journal to refer to the unknown reader, he would have never known someone would end up reading his journal, but it helps him confide and share his deepest thoughts by imagining there is someone there for him.
Entry 3:
Many people feel guilty for falling in love again after the death of their previous spouse, so I wanted to show how John Brown might be conflicted over being captivated by Tita but also trying to keep his loyalties to his
