John And Patsy Ramsey: Touch DNA Analysis

Decent Essays
John and Patsy Ramsey were no longer people of interest in the murder of their daughter on July 9th thanks to touch DNA analysis. Touch DNA analysis is defined as: analysis of skin cells left on firearms, victim’s bodies, or any other surface at the scene (Minor, M.S., 2013, p. xx). Touch DNA analysis was brought to the forefront by the Ramsey case in 1999. Crime Scene techs collect skin cells from the crime scene and test them using PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to make copies of 13 locations on the DNA (Minor, M.S., 2013, p. xx). It only requires 7-8 cells from the epithelium (Houck & Houck, 2008). This technique is often confused with a process called Low Copy Number (LCN) testing (Houck & Houck, 2008). The process has been criticized

There were many pieces of evidence found at different scenes: a note in Hae’s car, a Brandy bottle and rope next to Hae’s body, and no fingerprints found at any of the scenes. Out of all the evidence found, fingerprints and DNA was not tested even though the forensics team said that they would. “We’re going to test them”He’s bluffing. They never do test.” -(Koenig, Sarah. In a Chronological list of cases, Newbold stated that because of this case in “1911 The first conviction is achieved on the basis of fingerprints. The case involves Thomas Jennings, found guilty of murder in Cook County, Illinois” (1999). The case of People v. Jennings happened in 1911 after Clarence B. Hiller was murdered in his own home one night. Hiller and his family were all asleep in their home when it happened. It wasn’t until Hiller woke up and found that their gas light was no longer on that he thought something was wrong (Acree, 1999).…

There were several things that should have had changes brought against both John and Patsy Ramsey. There were several open windows and at least one open door in the house on the night of the murder, which would make it easier for an intruder to gain entry to the home. The fact that it was later determined that Patsy Ramsey constructed and staged the ransom note with the exact amount of her husband’s bonus that was left at the scene by the Colorado Bureau of Investigations and that John Ramsey contaminated the evidence of the immediate area of the body and evidence on the body by moving it should have at least had them brought up on some type charges. Even though both of the Ramsey’s were cleared by DNA evidence, the police seriously botched…

The advancement of forensic science has progressed immensely since its conception. The contributions it has made for the legal system are immense. One such example are its techniques used to extract DNA during forensic cases. DNA is considered to be one of the most well regarded and highly assessed sources of information (Gershaw et al., 2010). Another important development used during investigations is CODIS or the Combined DNA Index System.…

Despite all of the good that using science in criminal investigation has done. Like all things there have been some hiccups. DNA testing has both enhanced and eroded the status of forensic science in criminal cases. Conventional forensic disciplines were unable to identify a perpetrator with any true discrimination. For instance, conventional serology (the study antigen or antibodies) field analysis of blood group substances was largely used in sexual assault cases during the 1980s (Mosby's Medical Dictionary 8th edition, 2009).…

The murder of a small child on a Christmas night was one that shocked the nation, and ignited a fierce demand to find the killer. Countless theories have been brought forth on the death of JonBenét Ramsey, but due to a profusion of contradicting evidence and multiple errors in the course of the investigation, the party responsible was never caught. Although the guilty individual, or individuals, will probably never be prosecuted, in light of certain evidence, behaviors, and circumstances, it is highly likely that John and Patsy Ramsey murdered their child. There is an abundance of evidence that, with logic and reasoning, supports this theory, that John and Patsy Ramsey are responsible for JonBenét’s death. Remnants of supplies involved in…

It is clear now that the whole house was a crime scene. The morning of the investigation police, victim advocates, and JonBenet’s family roamed around, what should have been a crime scene, cleaning up evidence (Glick et al.). Mark Beckner, the former Boulder Police Chief, feels that the scene could have been secured much better and he considers this a mistake. Mark Beckner also believes that the police not interviewing John and Patsy Ramsey right after the discovery of…

The question, “Who killed JonBenét?” may be as mysterious as, “Was there a person on the grassy knoll?” The murder of JonBenét has spurred at least eight television episodes, mini-documentaries, or special reports - and in September 2016 (during our class), another show which touts new DNA evidence (IMDb, 2016). The more I read, the more confused I became, this was/is a messed up case to say the least. There are so many items to be considered as key elements and critical facts that my intention is to focus on a few specific items rather than discuss all the missteps of the police, coroner, the unusual behaviors of the parents, and other people invited into the crime scene. It goes without saying that the police did a poor job of securing…

Honestly, the mystery is still there but the truth is beneath that Ramsey house. There was no conviction since they haven’t cracked the case because the evidence is still inconclusive. But for a personal decision, the ransom note was handwriting by a women's writing because of this there is only one woman that had a writing sample which would be Patsy. The evidence is still concluded there is also the DNA from the sexual assault that assaulted JonBenet before she died. Many conclusions towards the death of JonBenet is that the murder is a family member.…

Many different things could go wrong while analysing DNA, such as cross-contamination. Ira Flatlow discussed in an interview that “sampling techniques are changing, so the standard for using DNA evidence should be changing, too.” At a crime scene, you could find fibers, hairs, and maybe even blood that has absolutely nothing to do with the crime that was committed. Someone could use things that has a person’s DNA to plant at a crime scene and have them framed. As crazy as it sounds, it happens.…
