In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the characters, John and Elizabeth Proctor, consist of tension and God. The both of them have many religious principles that they try to abide by to however a mistake was made that ended up causing a downfall to their deaths. John Proctor is a God fearing man who fell weak to a deadly sin by having an affair with his maid; His wicked action caused his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, to be falsely accused of witchcraft by the now prior maid. When John receives the news of Elizabeth’s persecution, Arthur Miller tells us he is motivated to get her out of the mess he ignited because “[His] wife will not die for [him]! [He] will bring [Mary Warren’s] guts into [her] mouth but that goodness will not die for [him]!” (ll.990-992).
