During the seemingly uneventful conversation between John and Elizabeth Proctor in the play the Crucible, John becomes very angered because no matter what he does, Elizabeth will not stop begin resentful and suspicious of John. He feels that Elizabeth is accusing him of continuing the affair that he had many years ago. John Proctor has had an affair before with the Proctor’s old servant, Abigail. Elizabeth is aware of this affair. Recently has claimed that she has been bewitched and is accusing many people of bewitching her. John has talked to Abigail and knows that she is making many false accusations. Elizabeth enters this scene instructing John to go tell the court that this is a fraud. Elizabeth begins to show her resentment, and John responds, “I have gone tiptoe in this house all seven month since she [Abigail] is gone. I have not moved from there to there without I think to please you, and still an everlasting funeral marches round your heart”. (54) John has done everything since the affair with extreme diligence to make Elizabeth happy. Going tiptoe implies that he is being very careful about literally where he puts his feet, but figuratively how exact he is with his actions. He takes very careful steps for an entire seven months! He continues saying that he has not moved without taking Elizabeth’s wants into consideration. He is very careful about what he does in order to please Elizabeth. He still feels a overwhelming resentment towards him. He is trying to find his way back towards Elizabeth’s heart yet with all of his efforts, he only finds Elizabeth’s heart to be dark, lifeless, and in mourning.
