On October 14th, 1425 Johannes Ockeghem was born in Saint-Ghislain, Belgium. He wrote a famous piece called “Harmonice Musices odhecaton”, which he wrote while mourning the death of his friend, Gilles Binchois. He also wrote “O Rosa Bella”, which became a very popular piece in the 15th century. He was not only a composer, but also a singer and a choir master. He was famous for his low voice, with which he would sing bass. Ockeghem also composed his own piece of music called “Missa Prolationum”, which meant that he could make his voice sound like musical instruments. Similar to the music and sounds we improvise in singing ‘acapella’ today. Ockeghem spent his life working for kings, composers, and writers, and died of natural causes on February

The greatest challenge in studying the life of Johannes Ockeghem is the discouraging absence of concrete evidence of the date of his birth and death, specifics of life activity, and even original manuscripts. This lack of records and information results from the cultural practices of preserving this sort of data, which are not as meticulous compared to today’s. Scholars and musicologists however study Ockeghem because he “had added something to the musical knowledge of his time” (Krenek, 7)1. Ockeghem was born around 1430 in East Flanders (Belgium today) and studied with either Guillaume Dufay in Cambrai or with Gille Binchois, Flemish…
