There is currently a large amount of debate about the representation of Johann van Eyck's "Wedding Portrait". The portrait depicts a wealthy couple holding hands in their Flemish home. However, it does not necessarily imply a wedding or marriage. There are many symbolic aspects to this double portrait that I believe should be mentioned. Symbols such as the shoes, chandelier, dog, carpet, and fruit give the viewer subtle but, unclear details as to the purpose of the narrative. The shoes are a representation of a sacred event which may also tie in to the chandelier which might mean the presence of God. In addition, the dog is a symbol of fidelity and loyalty between the couple. Furthermore, the carpet and fruit are both symbolic of the couples
