Most of Johann Gutenberg’s early life is a mystery, but we do know some information about him. He was born in 1398 in Mainz, Germany. Gutenberg was the youngest son of his father (Friele Gensfleisch zur Laden) and his father’s second wife (Else Wyrich). Johann’s father was an upper-class merchant (this meant he made lots of money). Johann’s father was a great dad and taught him many things including how to read; because of his father’s wealth his father was able to buy him many manuscripts (similar to books).
Gutenberg became upset that only wealthy people could afford manuscripts, so he created a workshop in Strasburg, where he moved. Gutenberg told Fust how hard he had been working to make books available to everyone, and he now had no money (he didn’t have money because he never mentioned what he was doing to his father). Fust became very interested so he gave Gutenberg the money he needed to continue his experiment. With the money Fust gave Gutenberg he made blocks of wood with single letters that he could put together in any order to make words and rearrange them for the next page, but the letters did not always come out clearly.
