I’ve now come to resent Mac now, it has been days since we have had food and it is because of him. After the Green Hornet had crashed, Mac had eaten all of the chocolate bars, leaving us without a food source. I wanted to throw him into the ocean, but I knew that doing that would not have any positive feedback whatsoever, so I refrained from doing so. Fortunately, an albatross landed on my head, I reached up and snapped its neck, using the meat of the bird for bait since we couldn’t eat it; it simply smelled awful. Phil and I have been optimistic about our situation so far, while Mac seems to be fading more every day.…

Bruises hurt. Growing up with the uncomfortable yellow-green of an old battle wound sustained from being an adventurous kid wasn't much of a surprise. The off-shade violet of a deep one, or the angry red of an underdeveloped one, on the other hand, is a more recent discovery. Receiving them daily has become a required hindrance when being chased by your neighbor's sex crazed Pit bull. I could have gotten a car to avoid him --my town is small and my mother never thought I needed one--…

The short stories, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Fireman’s Wife” by Richard Bausch have resonated with me after reading them this semester. I am able to draw similarities from what I’ve read and associate them with the story. Doing so made what I read capture my full attention and transport me into the story. Also, I discovered and tackled flaws in my own character in the process. I found both of these short stories to have been thought provoking and an interesting read as well.…

Reading the excerpt from Karen Van Der Zee’s book “A Secret Sorrow” brings to mind a person who is very dear to me. I’m sure there are many people out there who may know someone in the same predicament, so this scenario is by no means unique. However, it is very close to my heart and shows that sometimes there can be happy endings, or that fairy tales can come true. Growing up I always had a lot of friends, some would move, or change schools, and eventually, over time, we would lose contact with each other. However, two friends stayed constant over the years.…
