I am a woman. I am a firefighter. Oftentimes it feels like those two statements were never meant to be said together, but I say them proudly. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve had to smile politely or laugh awkwardly when a stranger hurled a cliché in my direction, I’d be quite wealthy. It’s not easy being a firefighter.…
Los Angeles Fire Department For my research I chose the Los Angeles Fire Department. Their Mission statement is “to preserve life and property, promote public safety and foster economic growth through leadership, management and actions, as an all risk life safety response provider.” I found it important to note that LA city is the biggest in size and second most populated city in the United States, so they have a very big and important mission. History-…

Short Constructed Response Evaluations The question: How does the fire provide a solution to the problem? Be sure to use and cite evidence from the text A) Mr. Jamison has time to get T.J. to Strawberry for trial. Mr. Granger stops T.J.s hanging by getting everyone to put out the fire. This gives Mr. Jamison a distraction to get T.J. away from the mob.…
In the short story “Safe” by Cherylene Lee reveals the narrator’s divulgence of her experience with “true danger”. During the reading, we find that she and her brother live with fearfully careful parents while, ironically, the brother dives from great heights for a living after engulfing his body in flames. He is the narrator’s first example of peril. Paragraph six especially exemplifies the naivety of our narrator, clarifies her misunderstandings of danger, and establishes her warped expectations of consequence. She finds revelation in this example and learns from her brother instead of being conditioned to fear the future.…
Guy Montag, a fireman in his world, confused by his own intentions figures there is more to life than the little he has been told. Although he doesn't know how to make a change. In a society reliant on technology and the ease it brings, authenticity of information is in short supply, dehumanized by the deprivation of real feelings and emotions leads to people's live being seemingly superfluous to themselves and desentization leads to negativity where people can't control their own thoughts even if they wanted to, taking away the very qualities that make us human which is immoral Guy, raised on the belief to burn books, destroys knowledge for a living, and enjoys it. Fireman set fire to books and houses alike, taking the information with the flames.…
The grass was brown and dead, heat from the sun hitting the earth at angles that start fires. Wind was blowing, but it felt hot and humid, with a thickness that sent claustrophobic feelings into the lungs of every individual. The Willits Charter School was doomed to have mile testing on the day when the effects of the fire reached the south side of town. Everyone who lived within 5 miles of town was inflamed from the inside with exhaustion and smoke sickness. Personally, my body was plagued with the effects of smoke, smaug and asthma.…

The short stories, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Fireman’s Wife” by Richard Bausch have resonated with me after reading them this semester. I am able to draw similarities from what I’ve read and associate them with the story. Doing so made what I read capture my full attention and transport me into the story. Also, I discovered and tackled flaws in my own character in the process. I found both of these short stories to have been thought provoking and an interesting read as well.…
Warning signs of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and firefighter suicide Fire department officers that present information on warning signs of suicide and PTSD to their firefighters will reduce the amount of affected firefighters by these two behavior issues each year. Warning signs are designed for family, and coworkers, however, they could also be for friends. Warning signs can just be another tool to protect our firefighters, time is going by so fast that co-workers do not recognize that their fellow firefighter may be acquiring thoughts of suicide or post-traumatic stress disorder. To provide help quicker to these firefighters- co-workers, supervisors, and possibly management should have a good idea of how this firefighter acts normally…

The Call That Changed My Life I was 18 Years Old, brand new on Groveland Fire Department with only a few months of experience, I recently graduated High School, I recount a call that has forever changed who I was and made me into who I aspire to be. What you’re about to read will take you not only through my eyes, but my choices, my compassion & commitment to helping others, and the remorse that follows first responders with tragic events that the public rarely sees, knowing that despite you trying everything you could it never being enough, and thinking to yourself if you had only tried that instead maybe they would still be with us. I would like to dedicate my story to the challenges all first responders face, every single day.…
Feud Within Touching the Void is a compelling, vigorous and intimate story that uses emotional, figurative language to broaden the seriousness of the situations that lies before the climbers. It captures your attention and causes you to be fully engaged in the book in order to understand the reality of the situation. The creation of Touching the Void by Joe Simpson, began in 1985 when Joe Simpson and Simon Yates decided to climb Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. The freezing temperatures, lack of warmth, hydration and food made the climb excruciating day by day. After three days of ascending, disaster struck.…
