Background/history:
Mr. Joel Rodriguez is a 33 year old male who resides in Turners Falls Massachusetts. Joel has been diagnosed with learning difficulties and secondary disabilities include; ADHD, depression, anxiety and slow processing which impact his memory, organization, attention, focus, reading, writing and math. In school Joel recalls being placed in special educational classes throughout his academic career. He stated he stayed back in seventh grade and dropped out of high school in the ninth grade because he felt the educational system was just pushing him through. Later, Joel did continue his education and was able to complete his GED.
Joel will be attending Greenfield Community College this fall to pursuit an associated degree

Joel states he needs to reread a passage over to comprehend what he had read. He continued to say if a page is very busy with other than the text on the page he becomes confused or distracted and loses his place. Joel was shown the Read and Write Gold program and the Kurzweil program. Both programs have the ability to read and highlight text, but Joel preferred the writing path feature and the templates which the Kurzweil program provides. The templates allow Joel to breakdown his writing assignments into smaller chunks. Having the draft templates within the Kurzweil program will help Joel with note taking as he can follow the draft template while highlighting and extracting notes, giving him the support he needs before he begins the writing process. The ATS is recommending Joel is provided with the Kurzweil program to support him with difficulties with reading and writing. Joel does not have a printer and will need an All in One printer to scan material when it is not provided in a digital format. Joel will need an iPod Touch in order to upload Kurzweil MP3 files for access when he is not at his computer. Joel’s phone should provide enough room to download his books in a digital format so he will be able to listen to them when he is away from his …show more content…
Joel articulates well, and he has better explained the material verbally rather than typing or writing. Due to Joel’s ADHD he states he struggles with getting his thoughts down on paper before he forgets them. The ATS discussed the possibility of using speech recognition software instead of writing. The ATS had Joel try the Window Speech Recognition program. He liked having the computer write for him as he spoke. Next, Joel tried the Dragon NaturallySpeaking program. Both programs could provide him with the ability to place his thoughts down on paper before he forgets them. Although, Joel preferred the playback feature which the Dragon NaturallySpeaking program provides. He also liked the idea that she can use the Dragon NaturallySpeaking program when emailing. The Windows Speech Recognition program does not work with other applications. Joel has a slight Spanish tone to his voice along with a New York accent. The Windows Speech Recognition program did not respond well to Joel’s commands. The ATS is recommending Joel is provided with the Dragon NaturallySpeaking Program Premium version with a USB headset. The Dragon Naturally Speaking program can be used side by side with the Kurzweil program to help Joel with his writing. The ATS is recommending Joel access the research project calculator application rpc.elms4you.org to help organize his time with large writing assignments. To help
