Director’s Concept of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone
Joe Turner’s Come and Gone was written by American playwright August Wilson. The play is set in 1911, in a boardinghouse Pittsburgh and tells the story of African American struggles in a post-civil war environment.
Themes
There are several themes to highlight throughout the play with the central theme being resolve. Each one of the characters in this play is determined to achieve or maintain something; for example, Seth Holly is the owner of the boardinghouse and he is always stressing the respectful and proper reputation his home has always enjoyed.
Determination and conviction are exemplified by Herald Loomis as he has searched for his wife for four years after his seven year imprisonment in …show more content…
The mood can turn very serious at times as there is an aura of the unknown when Loomis is on set. Seth is not trusting of Loomis and he makes sure that those around him know this.
The mood changes to romance and amorousness whenever Jeremy is on set as a young man trying to enamor young women he talks to and the scene between Rueben and Zonia where they kiss.
Overall Look and Feel
The boardinghouse is certainly not in a wealthy neighborhood and the set should be decorated with pieces that would be common place at the time. The wardrobe should be modest and not ostentatious as the characters are not affluent and in somewhat of a transient stage in their life.
The set should have a rustic feel to it. The kitchen should be construed as a working one, all set pieces should appear to have been used for many years and should be made of common materials such as wood or steel.
