Improved Essays
When you hear the expression modern-day hero, who comes to your mind? Is this person famous? Is this person from your family? For me, there is a specific person that comes to my mind. This person is tenant Joe Torillo, a firefighter who went to WTC towers in 9/11 for trying saving lifes. He is the first person that comes to my mind because, for me, he matches perfectly in the concept of hero. That’s because he risked his life for others life, and for me, that’s what a hero do. When people say the word hero, what comes to their mind generally are the ancient Greek stories, like Perseus, Hercules, Odysseu. These heroes have some characteristics in common between each other, as kindness, braveness and intelligence, that’s why they are remembered …show more content…
He is a very brave man, just as the classical heroes, but the difference is that he comes from the real life. He risked his own life for trying saving other’s people life.
Joe Torillo fits perfectly in the concept of modern-day hero, because he really risked his life, by entering into the fire from WTC towers, only for helping others. But when we compare him to an epic hero, it has some differences. Joe Torillo is not noble and a totally handsome guy as the epic heroes. Another difference is that most of the epic heroes follow the “Hero’s Journey”, but Joe Torillo does not pass by this. He does not have the stages in his role in the WTC 9/11 attack, for exemple. But he is similar too in some points, as his braveness, that is just like from the epic heroes.
Joe Torillo totally worth the title of hero, because he has done the most difficult and respectable that a person can do; putted other’s life in a higher level them his own, making they more important. For everyone, he should be considered a hero, because he has done the most difficult and beautiful thing he could have done, and if someone doesn’t consider this a hero, it will be difficult to this person to find someone greater than Joe

Hero vs Hero There are many people in the world that can be portrayed as a hero, but what really is a hero. The dictionary states that a hero is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” In the book The Odyssey, Odysseus was portrayed as the hero who saved everyone from the trojan war. Another hero who saves people and cares about others and not just himself is Iron man from the movie Iron Man(2008,2010,2013). Who is a hero for you? Many people answer that from superheroes to a war hero because people have different views on heroes. However, heroes are for me people who think of others first before they think of themselves. The best example of heroes is Terry Fox who was a Canadian and marathoner. Even though Terry Fox had his right leg amputated at the knee because of cancer, he tried to run across Canada to raise money for people with cancer, so many Canadian admire him.…

Odysseus is a hero because he risked his life for his crew and never gave up. www.Dictionary.com defines a hero as a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character. This definition is not quite how I would describe a hero, personally. I would define a hero as someone whom completed courageous acts, yes, but they completed the acts not out of necessity or because it will benefit the person completing the act. Instead, a hero is someone who does a courageous act without even thinking about how it will affect them, negatively or positively.…

Everybody has a different outlook on a modern hero. Some people think of them as brave romancers, who would do anything for the damsel in distress. Others prefer a brother at arms, rushing into distress for those they love. No matter who it is though, these people expect equality from their “hero.” Nobody imagines a slave owner, or an Ellis Island employee as their hero.…

The tale of a hero is one of the most classic of stories, told in various forms throughout the ages. Every hero, classical and modern, has different strengths, weaknesses, and challenges that they demonstrate and face along the way, exhibiting traits that prove them a hero. While there is no doubt that the central figures of the Greek myths of Perseus, Hercules, and Atalanta are all heroes, Hercules, strong both in will and physically, stands as the best example of a classic hero. Heroes are not made without challenges, some of which they face early on in their journey. Hercules and Atalanta meet their first struggle as children, with the goddess Hera sending the former “two great snakes [that] came crawling into the nursery” (Hamilton 228), which Hercules promptly kills, and the latter being “left on a wild mountainside to die of cold and hunger” (Hamilton 246) by her father.…
