The leaders I identified to research were the creators of the firm Perella Weinberg and Partners. Joe Perella was born in Newark, New Jersey and graduated with a degree in accounting from Leigh University, and received his MBA from the Harvard Business School. Peter Weinberg graduated his undergraduate studies from Claremont McKenna College, and also received his MBA from Harvard. Both individuals came up through the investment banking world in different ways, but each ended up very successful. Joe Perella started his career at First Boston, and worked in mergers and acquisitions for 16 years. He then teamed up with Bruce Wasserstein to create a new mergers and acquisitions firm, Wasserstein Perella & Co, which lead the charge in the 1980’s and 90s of corporate takeovers. Perella later worked for Morgan Stanley as head of mergers and acquisitions, and then opened a new boutique bank with Peter Weinberg, Perella Weinberg Partners. Peter Weinberg started his career off at Morgan Stanley, where he worked for 9 years, and then transitioned to Goldman Sachs in 1988. He …show more content…
These are often seen as a “velvet coffin” for high level executives, as they can fairly easily run parts of the firm with the peace of mind that they can retire financially stable. Both began to grow disgruntled with their work environment, Perella’s disagreements with the chairman of Morgan Stanley and Weinberg’s restlessness not being as closely associated with his clients. The two met and discussed how they wanted to spend the next 15 years of their life, and found to be very similar. This has led to a very successful partnership where they claim they have never had a major disagreement.
