In class, controlling was defined as follows: “Controlling means monitoring employees' activities, determining whether the organization is on target toward its goals, and making correction as necessary” (Slide 9, Fundamentals of Sports Management). Maddon did a great job in 2015 of managing his players production to ensure that the organization was always moving towards its goals. The goal, of course, was to try and win a World Series — something that Maddon made clear from his opening press conference when he was introduced as the team’s manager. One example of this came when he decided to bench Starlin Castro. Castro, who was in his sixth year with the organization, was one of the team’s most tenured players. Despite this, Maddon decided to be bold and bench the veteran shortstop for poor performance on the field. This decision was scrutinized by many, but ended up working to the best interest of the team. The team improved in statistical production from the shortstop position both offensively and defensively following the decision. Benching a three time all-star is a gutsy decision, but Maddon made the right move. As Castro rode the bench for a good portion of the last two months of the season, Maddon managed the situation perfectly. He does a fantastic job of motivating and influencing his players. He does this by setting extremely high goals — while the bar is always set high, it’s always a reasonable and attainable expectation. Carroll is as ambitious as they come. Rob Asghar, a student of management and employee at USC, observed Carroll’s tenure at the University closely.
