Research Paper: Option Two – Media Analysis
Introduction
According to Jody Miller in One of the Guys: Girls, Gangs, and Gender, girls who experience violence when they are younger are more likely to be violent and be involved with criminal activity when they are older. This statement is accurate based off of the study Miller did with girls in gangs, but what about girls who had the perfect life and still ended up in prison? What about the girls who grew up in safe homes with protective parents and even had the perfect adult life? What caused these women to be in prison and be in the situation they are in today? After watching Investigative Discovery’s Women in Prison, one could better understand what would cause women with no past involvement in crimes to end up in prison. After listening to the stories of twelve “good girls” and how they ended up in prison, a viewer can learn about the lives of women as offenders and what motivates them to do what they did. These twelve women tell their stories about how they ended up being incarcerated as well as what their family life was like and currently is like. These twelve women were once seen as the “good girls.” Some grew up in homes as the “preacher’s daughter.” Some grew up to get married to the man of their dreams while keeping their faith and religion their main priority. Some had great parents, so why is it that they ended up committing one of the three crimes all of these women committed: Murder, robbery, or a crime related to a drug addiction. These women had the perfect lives and even state that they never would have thought they would have ended up in
