Jocks And Nerds

Improved Essays
Let me start by saying that I find humor in any multimedia or Hollywood portrayal of high school as an amalgamation of divisive and antithetical groups such as the "jocks" and "nerds". Any high school student should agree with me in stating that these depictions greatly elucidate the intricate panoply of student's activities, interests, virtues, appearances, and emotions to an absurd and almost laughable degree.
To answer the question bluntly, I do not identify with any of these rudimentary archetypes. I refrain from ever doing so because, as a human, I am much more complex than just a "jock" who plays sports and flunks math, or a "nerd" who enjoys fantasy but is neglected of a social life. These names do not confine us in a fixed set of actions

For most Americans, High school was a special experience. Whether you were a nerd, goth, joke, skater, or something else entirety, never will it be replicated again. High school is usually where you gain long term friends, find yourself as a person, and learn complex concepts to ready yourself for college. It is also a place of great sociological occurrences and proves to be eye opening. Some films do a great job of telling a story using what happens in High schools.…

I wrote more on the issue "Why We Hate The Smart Kids" by Grant Penrod. I'm going to argue with the author on this one because I agree with everything he is trying to teach us in this article. For many students in high school or even college, it's the best time for them, most of them only come for the sports or the debate teams. In any high school, there are many different groups like; the jocks, the boring kids, the stoners, and the nerds. Out of all the groups I have said the one that gets the most heat are the nerds.…

    Jocks Stereotypes

Somewhere along the way we lost our sense that everyone deserves a chance until they prove otherwise. I believe this is why the issue of stereotypes and making every stereotype negative is such a problem in American society today. A jock may be used to having to show out to do their best and advance in their sport, not to make others feel less than them. A band geek may use music as an escape; not as a way to avoid others. A preppy girl may simply like to dress nice; not be a force if negativity to others.…

    2. Many students today consider themselves to be multidimensional, but media portrayals of high school are full of identity archetypes (e.g. the nerd, the jock, the rebel, etc.). Reflecting on your high school experience, would you say you identify with one of these? If so, why and why do you embrace it? If not, why not?…

The typical fads came from what friends have heard about and have done, and this influenced the masses in cycles. Peer groups were created throughout all high schools, these groups are now more commonly known as cliques. These peer groups and cliques were the groups of friends that would mainly hang out and party together on the weekends. Before the majority of youths went to high school, people would be judged and classified by the family’s social class, with schooling the judgements were based off of the different emerging cliques. These cliques have become the main tell of what class a teen was.…

This movie was filmed in 1984, and in theatres by 1985. This movie was directed, written, and produced by John Hughes, who is responsible for many 80’s movies, such as Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and 16 Candles.…

When someone blurts out the word “high school”, what’s your first initial thought? I don’t know about you, but “cliques” are the first thought to my mind. The media is drowning in films that portray the idea of “cliques”, but personally, I believe the film Mean Girls is the best representation of the world of cliques. Means Girls is a teen classic, and I can almost bet the majority of my generation has seen or at least heard of it. It is American teen comedy film that manifests the harsh conditions teens undergo when it comes to high school cliques.…

After watching the film “Mean Girls”, there are some realistic aspects which can be applied to an actual high-school scenario. Though, most of the social context is purely based off of Hollywood creation, which allows for larger drama within and between cliques. Furthermore, there are many aspects which must be considered in comparing this fictional society to an actual high school scenario. This would include agents of socialization, social institutions, primary and secondary groups, and many other factors.…

When I attended high school there was no football jocks walking around with their varsity jackets all day and there was not people getting beaten up for their lunch money. These are just a few examples of misleading and stereotypical portrayals of high school that the media gives us. I’m not going to say that there is no drama in high school, because there definitely is, my point is that the media makes it seems like these are the only types of problems that go on in high school. Consuming alcohol, illegal drugs, pre-marital sex, and rebellion are the cornerstones of adolescence in the eyes of Hollywood (Faulkner 2008). While some these situations do make-up a teen’s life, the media definitely exaggerates it by a lot.…

Reality versus Perceptibility Growing up I remember watching so many books, shows, and movies about high school. A few of them taught lessons. A few of them portrayed high school to be the greatest time or the worst time of your life. Some even went above and beyond to show you what high school was about, while staying true but being overly dramatic. By growing up in the age of technology watching the tv was basically and everyday thing.…

High school is a world full of hate, fear, anxiety, stress, emotion, and embarrassment. It has never made much senses to me why the movies make high school seem like a place of perfect-pitched, random outbursts of happy songs. Mean words are spoken and tears are shed. Coaches will yell at you to the point of giving up and crawling under a rock. Girls are especially brutal in high school.…

When entering junior high, we were constantly reminded by teachers, parents, and school administrators how different it was from elementary school. It was supposed to be the start of a transition from childhood to young adulthood, and though I discounted many of these sentiments at the time, looking back it certainly was. In an instant, it seemed, everyone started swearing and the hallways began to smell of a putrid mixture of not enough or too much cologne. For the first time we had to change before gym, no one really sure whether it was more socially acceptable to change in a bathroom stall or feign confidence by doing it out in the open. Talk swirled of who got their periods, who was wearing what bra size, and which boys needed to stop cultivating…
