Analysis: The Joburg Ballet Company

Good Essays
The Joburg Ballet Company was established with the mission to give and provide young dancers, skilled in both classical ballet and contemporary dance with the opportunity to train and grow, along with the help of private teachers. Since then the company has produced multiple sets of work such as Romeo and Juliet where their dancers were showcased performing in front of a huge crowd at the Joburg theatre and other stages carrying out that mission. And this year that mission came in a form of the premiere of the elegant Snow White which took place during the13th to the 22th of October 2017.
On the 18th of October 2017, the Joburg ballet presented one of their performances of the legendary Snow White which took place at the Joburg Theatre, Braamfontein,

This was because it related very well with the themes of the production. The costumes (sparkly and fluffy gowns and great man attire) as well showed that a lot of thought was put into the process of selecting them because they reflected the characters and who they were in a way that was appropriate for the audience.
“What is a performance without lighting and props?” With a theatre like the Joburg theatre that provides you with the space and the technology to use during a production, the lighting and props used during this production were just as amazing. They were not the same for different interludes of the production but different to show the transition of the story efficiently which helped in clearing out confusion. This was a very effective way to set out the performance because it made the experience better for the audience watching.
However when looking at the elements of dance there were a few blunders here and there such as timing during duets, trios and pieces which involved almost the whole cast. It was not only that the dancers were not in time but certain factors such as having different speeds during a turn affected the timing

It was quiet hilarious to see the way the dancers reflected all the different dwarfs from the clumsy one to the shy one and the way they interacted with Snow White. This even made it impossible to tell whether the choreography was meant to look the way it did because you would see timing issues and choreography mistakes but because of the mood and the characters themselves, it looked funny and right at the same time. The queen was one of the outstanding dancers because she owned her role, from the moment she was introduced till the very end. Her costume was amazing and she pulled you in and just made you want to see more of her and her evil ways.
In all overall, the company was great and the performance even though it could have done even better with improvements in terms of timing, spacing and choreography, it was surprising. It painted the story of Snow White as it is featuring talented and experienced dancers in the country and it kept the audience alert. Amusing show to watch and I hope the rest of the premieres were as exciting as this

The choreography was so dynamic and unique that you never knew what to watch because everything that was going on was so beautiful. Some things that could have been better about the piece was really committing to the movement along with the facial expressions. I felt that some people in the dancers were not very confident in the movement that they were doing. Along with the dancing some of them did not commit to the facials. For example if they were to be portraying that they were lost without God they just had a blank look on their face rather than a lost look.…

The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…

Even though, it could be done with either male or female, I believe that the dance was best with both genders because it gave the audience a way to contrast between the characters’ personalities. It reminded me a lot of how a married couple feels about each other or jealousy took a toll on a relationship by using music that was light-hearted, and upbeat. To compliment the music, many of the movements were angular, abrupt, and uplifting with various levels of high, medium, and low. The male had strong, dominant jumps, and movements toward the audience member and the female dance; yet, he was loving with his movements to show he was just someone who wanted to be loved. Whereas, the female dancer, she was sassy, jealous, and wanted to take away the happiness of the male.…

The first dance of the evening was Psalms of Mass Destruction (Or: Lost). The dance itself was interesting to watch and made use of the dancers talents, but if I had not read the choreographer’s note about the concept I would not have understood what was going on. The costuming was solid and create unity by having them wear the same tops and bottoms, while giving them individuality with the bottoms being different types of clothing and styles. I was quite impressed by the entire makeup of Don’t Worry Your Pretty Little Head. Firstly, the choreography was quite unique and different from anything else I have seen.…

I wouldn’t really say that every dance made an outstanding impression on me from the beginning. Royals I enjoyed the costuming and use of props. Steam Heat I enjoyed how the choreography used the costumes (hats) as a part of the dance. I also enjoyed the music because it made me reflect back on my competition days. Fighter I enjoyed the power in the movement and how the lighting made the dance so much more impactful.…

They were contrasted well enough to keep the show more entertaining. The situations that both Ever and Senga have encountered were believable to a certain extent such as when Ever was freaking out when being touched and Senga had to dance while being injured. Other than that, both of their problems were solved. The characters lead me to new understanding because there are more qualities in the characters themselves and not just their personalities. Both Senga and Ever were funny because they talked about each other in a way that does not discriminate each other.…

It was practically special because Western Michigan University symphony orchestra had the opportunity to play along side of the dancers. Throughout the ballet, I loved the dancers emotions and how there was not always movement going on. There could be a stillness on the stage but your attention was still caught because there was a reason for it, to develop the story line. As an audience member I really enjoyed…

The main function of the set was to provide the audience with some context for the play and a chance to create something beautiful to draw in the audience. Sets are created to be highly realistic, abstract or anything that is in between. It gives the designer a chance to showcase the unusual materials that are used, as well as interesting concepts and new techniques. For instance, the staircase that was on stage, I thought that was very unusual and amazing at the same time because I never thought that was possible to have a staircase on stage. By the way the staircase was designed and set up I can tell the set designer took a lot of time and effort to design and master the ability to create a staircase that let the audience know that the actors were in a house setting.…

His perfect skills and the upbeat nature of the performances really drew in my attention and made me want to dance myself. Classical ballet is more of an elegant form of dance where the precision and physical talent really shine. Ballet is often used to tell a story relying on the dancing itself and music. Ballet provides strong emotion and that is needed because there are no words usually during a performance. Modern Dance as a whole is the variations and adaptations we make to traditional dancing.…

I do not think there was one thing I did not enjoy about the play. The reason I enjoyed the play is because the story about the freaks was very vivid and understanding. The actors, costumes, music, designs were all amazing. The director, casts, and staging were all great. The director of the play is Adriano Cabral and he did a fantastic job.…
