While the Work-Study programs target Freshmen and Sophomores, Job Shadow programs and Loyola’s Job Fairs target Juniors and Seniors looking to enter into the workforce post-graduation (Jackson, 2016). Due to their location in an urban environment, Loyola establishes strong relationships with local businesses. One of the largest university campus fairs occurs at the end of February and brings over 90 corporations, NFPs, and government organizations to Loyola’s Damen Student Center (“Archive: Loyola University Chicago,” 2016). The career fair is open to all current graduate and undergraduate students from all schools as well as alumni seek full-time, part-time or internship opportunity (“Archive: Loyola University Chicago,” 2016). Loyola shows innovation with its use of technology and marketing to promote the events. Students and employers can receive up-to-date information and share their experiences through the hashtag #LUCFair (“Archive: Loyola University Chicago,” 2016). Also, Loyola developed a Career Fair app, which shows a full list of employers at the fair and a map showing each employer’s location. The app includes a “Career Fair 101” tab with tips and tricks to make the most out of the experience and make a good first impression. This app allows students to be efficient with their time as they can save employer’s information quickly, navigate the space with ease and feel confident in how they present themselves (Jackson, 2016). According to the Career Development Center quick facts sheet, “88 percent of graduates were employed 3 months after graduation and “98% of graduates were either employed or pursuing a graduate education after 3 months” (Slezak, 2016). However, I could not ascertain from my conversation with Jackson how the Career Development Center serves students of color, low-income students, and underrepresented minorities. They do not make mention of acting affirmatively to make job opportunities and work study positions available to these students.
