The healthcare industry is composed of a multitude of service providers located in places such as hospitals, clinics, private practices, pharmaceutical dispensaries and more. Every provider maintains databases of information, consisting of electronic and hard copy paper documents, that includes all manner of data ranging from patient records to transcribed notes to training manuals. Organization, maintenance and accountability for all of this data necessarily requires a massive collaborative effort to be made by many different administrators. This colossal undertaking is currently handled by the Health Information Services (HIS) Department. Additionally, the sheer amount of paperwork can become a staggering task to complete in a timely manner. Employees subjected to these conditions are at risk of losing motivation due to the boredom of repetitive tasks and also at risk of becoming stressed or overwhelmed from being overloaded with their assigned tasks and duties.

Taylor and Erdogan (2009) explain that some of the benefits of job enrichment include fewer absences and higher productivity and retention rates. These benefits result from happier employees that experience satisfaction with their jobs and motivation in their work. This job satisfaction and increased motivation results from the mechanism of job enrichment which involves giving more control and responsibility to employees in how they complete their various tasks (Carpenter et al., 2009). Layman (2011) further explained that if HIS managers and directors determine that change is warranted, they can consider the options, such as those proposed by Layman, and decide what course of action to take at that point (emphasis given with words in italics). Therefore, since no actual job redesign or outcomes actually occurred in HIS
Departments within the context of the case study by Layman, it is impossible to give a response for the following two questions asked in this assignment: -What were the outcomes of job enrichment in the HIS Departments? -What was the impact of job enrichment on motivation and communication in the HIS Departments?
In lieu of these responses, the following is a more appropriate question whose response can be found through analysis of the research provided by Layman in his case study: -What are the possible problem areas in the HIS Departments and proposed solutions if job enrichment were chosen to be implemented by management?
