Sacrifices are made so one’s morality is digested by the world. Courage is needed in order to follow one’s moral conscience even when their beliefs are challenged by the societal norms.
Courage is necessary for change. For centuries, women have been discriminated against and treated with less respect than men. Joan of Arc lived in the time period of medieval France during war time where women were practically worthy of nothing. She believed that she was needed to lead France to its victory despite the fact that women couldn’t lead war and she didn’t have any military experience. She wore mens clothes so that people would believe she was a man, giving her authority. She led France to its victory against England, defying gender differences. Although she was burned at stake for suspected witchcraft, later on she was canonized, becoming one of history’s greatest saints, because they realized what she did was right and amazing. When courage is needed in order to accomplish morality, it comes off as rebellion or an act of a traitor, instead of a courageous and brave action that should be honored and valued. These acts of courage lead to brutal consequences. Joan of Arc heard voices and had visions that she believed were sent from God to give her a mission of extreme importance. Her beliefs encouraged her to go against societal norms, and the law. Her mission of extreme importance included leading France to its victory during the French Revolution. Although she succeeded and encouraged the outcome of a historic war, she was burned at stake. “In the trial that followed, Joan was ordered to answer to some 70 charges against her, including witchcraft, heresy and dressing like a man,” according to history.com. The king took no chances, giving Joan of Arc the death sentence. At just nineteen years old, Joan of Arc led France to its victory, but that consequently led to being burned at stake. It wasn’t until twenty years later, when her actions were finally recognized as courageous and saintly things which then led her to being canonized and considered one of history’s greatest saints, the Maid of Orleans.
